CCNA vs CCNP vs CCIE — which to take first?

The short answer

Almost always CCNA first. Cisco removed the prerequisite chain in 2020, but the certifications themselves remained ladder-shaped — CCNP assumes CCNA depth, CCIE assumes CCNP depth, and the labs test exactly that.

The exception: engineers already 3+ years deep in operational networking who can validate they have the CCNA-equivalent foundation may skip CCNA and go directly to CCNP. Pure freshers attempting CCNP-direct typically take 2-3 attempts because they lack foundational fluency.

CCIE direct (without CCNA + CCNP) is technically allowed by Cisco. In 18 years of training engineers at Networkers Home, the founder Vikas Swami has seen exactly the engineers you'd expect succeed at CCIE-direct — those with 5+ years of senior operations experience already. The certification is a ratification of the work, not a replacement for it.

The Standard Path
01
CCNA
2-4 months. Foundation. Fresher entry at ₹6-10 LPA.
02
1-2 years operational experience
Build the depth CCNP expects.
03
CCNP (Enterprise / Security / DC)
4-9 months. Specialise. ₹8-25 LPA tier.
04
2-4 years senior experience
Architecture, design, post-incident work.
05
CCIE
12-18 months prep. Architect tier ₹25-60 LPA.
Total: ~5-7 years CCNA to CCIE, depending on aggressiveness.

Decision Rules

Quick decision rules, by situation.

If you are a fresher
Start with CCNA. Always.

2-4 months of focused work. Lands you at ₹6-10 LPA Network Engineer entry. Then take 12-18 months operational experience before deciding between CCNP Enterprise, Security, or Data Center. CCNA programme →

If you have 1-2 years operational experience without CCNA
Take Networkers Home's 5-in-1 CCNP combo.

Includes CCNA refresher + ENCOR + ENARSI + SD-WAN + AI Network Automation. Bridges the foundation gap and gets you CCNP-tier credentialed in 4 months. CCNP combo →

If you have 3-5 years experience already
CCNP Security or CCNP Enterprise direct.

Skip CCNA. Pick the specialisation matching your role target. ₹15-25 LPA Senior Engineer band is typically reachable within 12 months of CCNP completion.

If you have CCNP + 2-4 years senior experience
Begin CCIE preparation.

CCIE Security or CCIE Enterprise. 12-18 months focused study. ₹30-60 LPA tier on completion. Read the CCIE ROI analysis →

FAQ

Frequently asked.

Which Cisco certification should I take first — CCNA, CCNP, or CCIE? +

Almost always CCNA first. CCNA covers the foundational layer (routing, switching, basic security) that CCNP and CCIE both assume you already know. The exception is engineers with 3+ years of operational networking experience who can validate they have the foundational depth — they may skip CCNA and go directly to CCNP. CCIE direct (without CCNA + CCNP) is technically allowed by Cisco but rare in practice; the lab tests for specialisation depth that CCNP is specifically designed to build.

Can I skip CCNA and go directly to CCNP? +

Cisco does not require CCNA as a prerequisite for CCNP since 2020. However, the CCNP Encore (Core) exam assumes the depth CCNA covers. Engineers with 3+ years of hands-on networking experience often skip CCNA. Pure freshers attempting CCNP-direct typically take 2-3 attempts because they lack foundational fluency. Networkers Home's 5-in-1 CCNP combo includes a CCNA refresher specifically for this reason.

Is CCIE direct possible without CCNA and CCNP? +

Technically yes — Cisco only requires you to register with a CCO ID. Practically, no engineer clears the CCIE lab without 4-6 years of hands-on experience that maps to CCNP-level specialisation. The 8-hour CCIE lab tests for the depth CCNP forces you to build. The standard career path remains CCNA → CCNP → 2-3 years senior work → CCIE.

How long does the full CCNA → CCNP → CCIE path take? +

Realistic timeline: 6-12 months for CCNA + 1 year operational experience. Then 6-9 months for CCNP + 2-3 years senior experience. Then 12-18 months of focused CCIE preparation. Total: 5-7 years from CCNA to CCIE, depending on how aggressively you pursue each phase. Networkers Home's founder Vikas Swami compressed his two CCIE labs into 90 days (Oct 2008 + Jan 2009) — but only after years of operational depth at Wipro, HP, Cisco TAC VPN, and Mobily.

Should I take CCNA, CCNP, or CCIE for security roles? +

For Network Security Engineer roles (₹8-14 LPA), CCNA + CCNP Security is sufficient. For Cloud Security Engineer roles (₹10-18 LPA), CCNP Security + a cloud cert (AWS Security Specialty or Azure AZ-500) makes you competitive. For Security Architect roles (₹25-45 LPA), CCIE Security with 5+ years of senior experience is the standard credential. Networkers Home's Full Stack Network Security 8-month flagship pairs CCNP-depth with multi-vendor lab access (Palo Alto, Check Point, Fortinet).

Which has better job opportunities in 2026 — CCNA, CCNP, or CCIE? +

By volume: CCNA (the largest hiring pool, fresher tier). By compensation: CCIE (₹30-60 LPA at the top end). By career trajectory: CCNP (the credential that gates the ₹10+ LPA tier and prepares you for CCIE later). All three have demand in 2026 from Bangalore vendor R&D centres (Cisco, Palo Alto, Check Point) and the broader 800+ hiring partner network Networkers Home places into.

Will AI replace network engineers and make these certifications obsolete? +

AI is automating L1/L2 NOC work — alert triage, basic config rollouts, scripted troubleshooting. The CCNA-only engineers most exposed to AI are those who never moved beyond rote work. CCNP and CCIE-level work — architecture, multi-vendor integration, security posture, audit positioning — remain human-judgement roles. The defensive answer for CCNA candidates: don't stop at CCNA. The CCNA → CCNP → automation/security path is the AI-resilient version of a networking career.
