Unlike IGPs that focus on finding the fastest path within a network, BGP's primary role is to find the best path (or sequence of ASes) to reach a destination network across the entire internet.

Key Characteristics of BGP:

  • TCP Port 179: BGP peers establish a reliable connection over TCP port 179 to exchange routing information.
  • Attributes: BGP routes are rich with various attributes (e.g., AS_PATH, NEXT_HOP, LOCAL_PREF, MED) that are used in the BGP best path selection process. Understanding these attributes is crucial for effective BGP configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Scalability: BGP is designed to handle the immense scale of the internet, managing hundreds of thousands of routes.
