01 / THE IDEA

Restaurant Recommendation in practice.

Restaurant recommendation uses behaviour (ratings or visits), item metadata and context to suggest places a user may like. Common challenges are data sparsity, popularity bias, temporal drift and cold-start items or users; evaluation requires ranking metrics (Precision@K, Recall@K, NDCG) and offline–online validation.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed application: personalise suggestions for a local dining app to help users discover restaurants they may like, while surfacing explanations and allowing user feedback. The supplied starter does not implement the production components of this extension.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a restaurant recommendation system project
step by step.

01

Prepare the data

Collect user–restaurant interactions with timestamps and optional metadata; deduplicate and split into train and test by time to avoid leakage.

02

Build a baseline

Create a user–item matrix and compute user–user similarity (cosine) to score unseen restaurants from nearest neighbours.

03

Evaluate rankings

Measure Precision@K, Recall@K and NDCG on held-out interactions and inspect cold-start and sparse-user cases.

04

Plan deployment

Add caching, fallback rules, rate limits and a feedback capture mechanism; monitor coverage and online engagement.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the restaurant recommendation system starter actually does.

The supplied starter creates a small synthetic ratings DataFrame, pivots it into a user–item matrix, computes cosine similarity between users, finds the nearest neighbour for a target user, and recommends that neighbour's unseen items sorted by neighbour rating.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
matrix = ratings.pivot_table(index="user", columns="item", values="rating").fillna(0)
user_similarity = pd.DataFrame(
    cosine_similarity(matrix),
    index=matrix.index,
    columns=matrix.index,
)

target_user = "user_1"
neighbor = user_similarity[target_user].drop(target_user).idxmax()
unseen_items = matrix.loc[target_user][matrix.loc[target_user] == 0].index
scores = matrix.loc[neighbor, unseen_items].sort_values(ascending=False)
Important limitation

The code uses a tiny hand-crafted ratings table rather than real restaurant data, includes no item metadata or contextual signals, implements only a single neighbour-based score with no ranking metrics or train/test evaluation, and does not address cold-start, temporal splitting or production serving.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Restaurant Recommendations: a pilot concept

A proposed extension: replace the toy ratings with a real restaurant interaction log, add item metadata (cuisine, location), compute top-K ranked lists with NDCG evaluation, and surface simple explanations (neighbour-based) in a lightweight API.

WHO IT COULD SERVELocal dining apps and restaurant discovery services
FIRST MVPA time-split baseline that computes user–user similarity on real interaction logs, returns top-10 recommendations with Precision@10/NDCG and exposes a minimal API for a demo UI.
KEY RISKRecommendation errors can favour popular restaurants and exclude niche venues; keep a human-in-the-loop for business rules and do not use the prototype for automated decisions affecting listings or payments.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a restaurant recommendation system project puts on your resume.

  • Construct a user–item pivot table and handle missing values for sparse interactions.
  • Compute cosine similarity across users and derive neighbour-based recommendation scores.
  • Implement a simple recommendation pipeline that returns top-K unseen items for a target user.
  • Design evaluation checks: time-based train/test split and ranking metrics such as Precision@K and NDCG.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Restaurant Recommendation System project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project?
Yes — it’s a practical applied topic for a final year project that covers collaborative filtering, data handling and evaluation; expand from the starter to add metadata, context or hybrid models.
What should I learn or prepare before starting?
Familiarity with Python, pandas and scikit-learn, recommendation basics (collaborative vs content-based), ranking metrics (Precision@K, NDCG) and handling cold-start and temporal splits will help.
How should I evaluate progress and scope the work?
Start with offline ranking metrics on larger real datasets, implement train/test temporal splitting and baselines (user/item CF), then add metadata/context, ablation studies and a simple serving prototype; expect several weeks to a few months depending on depth.
