01 / THE IDEA

Product Recommendation in practice.

User-based collaborative filtering recommends products by finding users with similar rating patterns and suggesting items those neighbours liked. Important failure modes include sparse or biased ratings, cold-start items and users, popularity biases and the need for offline ranking metrics.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed extension for a small retail catalogue: surface personalised product suggestions for signed-in shoppers, with fallbacks for new users. This extension is not delivered by the supplied starter code.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a product recommendation system project
step by step.

01

Prepare a user-item matrix

Collect explicit ratings or implicit signals and pivot them into a dense user-by-item matrix, filling missing entries appropriately.

02

Compute user similarity

Measure similarity between user rows (cosine or Pearson) to find nearest neighbours for each target user.

03

Score unseen items

Aggregate neighbour ratings or weighted averages to score items the target user has not seen, then sort by score.

04

Evaluate and refine

Use offline ranking metrics (Precision@K, Recall@K, NDCG) and inspect cold-start and popularity-driven failures before deployment.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the product recommendation system starter actually does.

The starter builds a small DataFrame of hand-crafted user-item ratings, pivots it to a user-by-item matrix, computes cosine similarity between users, selects the single most similar neighbour for a target user, and recommends that neighbour's unseen items (printing the top three).

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
matrix = ratings.pivot_table(index="user", columns="item", values="rating").fillna(0)
user_similarity = pd.DataFrame(
    cosine_similarity(matrix),
    index=matrix.index,
    columns=matrix.index,
)

target_user = "user_1"
neighbor = user_similarity[target_user].drop(target_user).idxmax()
unseen_items = matrix.loc[target_user][matrix.loc[target_user] == 0].index
scores = matrix.loc[neighbor, unseen_items].sort_values(ascending=False)
Important limitation

The starter uses a tiny synthetic table of six users/items and does not include train/test splits, offline ranking metrics, item metadata, business rules (diversity or safety), or any deployment/serving logic; it cannot validate real-world recommendation performance or cold-start behaviour.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Retail pilot: personalised homepage cards

A proposed extension: replace the toy ratings with retail transaction histories and item metadata, compute k-nearest neighbours, rank top-K items per user and expose suggestions via a small API or homepage card that logs clicks for feedback.

WHO IT COULD SERVESmall online retailers
FIRST MVPA service that returns top-10 personalised product suggestions per signed-in user, with an A/B test harness and offline Precision@10 measurement.
KEY RISKPopularity bias and cold-start items can surface irrelevant or repetitive suggestions; keep a human-in-the-loop for business-rule overrides and do not use early pilot results for critical automated merchandising decisions.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a product recommendation system project puts on your resume.

  • Pivot user-item ratings into a dense matrix suitable for similarity computations.
  • Compute pairwise user similarity (cosine) and inspect nearest neighbours.
  • Generate neighbour-based scores for items a target user has not seen and rank them.
  • Design offline ranking metrics (Precision@K, Recall@K, NDCG) and identify cold-start and popularity-bias failure cases.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Product Recommendation System project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project?
Yes — it’s a concise applied topic that demonstrates recommender fundamentals, evaluation and system design; extend the starter with real datasets, scaling or hybrid features to meet thesis scope.
What skills and tools will I need to learn?
You should know Python, pandas and scikit-learn, plus basics of similarity metrics, evaluation (train/test splits, ranking metrics) and optional SQL or APIs for real data ingestion.
How should I evaluate progress and effort?
Start by reproducing the starter’s neighbour-based recommendations, then add larger datasets, train/test splits and offline metrics (precision@k, recall@k, MAP); expect several weeks to build and evaluate a robust baseline.
