Prepare the ratings matrix
Aggregate user-item interactions into a dense or sparse user-by-item matrix and decide how to treat implicit vs explicit feedback.
Music recommendation system. Inspect neighbour-based recommendations.
Music recommendation systems predict items a user may like from past behaviour, item metadata and context. Common approaches include neighbourhood models, matrix factorisation and sequence models. Practical issues include sparse feedback, popularity bias, cold-start items or users, and online evaluation with metrics such as Precision@K or NDCG.

A proposed extension: personalise a listening queue for casual users of a streaming demo by recommending tracks similar users enjoyed, while keeping a human reviewer or business rule in the loop for freshness and licensing constraints.
Aggregate user-item interactions into a dense or sparse user-by-item matrix and decide how to treat implicit vs explicit feedback.
Use cosine similarity or another distance to find nearest neighbours in the user space, taking care to normalise or centre ratings if needed.
Score unseen items for a target user using neighbour preferences and rank them to produce top-K suggestions.
Measure ranking metrics such as Precision@K and NDCG on held-out data and inspect common failure modes like popularity bias and cold-start.
The supplied starter builds a tiny ratings DataFrame of nine users×items interactions, pivots it to a user-by-item matrix, computes cosine similarity between users, finds the most similar other user to a target, and recommends that neighbour's unseen items by sorting their ratings.
matrix = ratings.pivot_table(index="user", columns="item", values="rating").fillna(0)
user_similarity = pd.DataFrame(
cosine_similarity(matrix),
index=matrix.index,
columns=matrix.index,
)
target_user = "user_1"
neighbor = user_similarity[target_user].drop(target_user).idxmax()
unseen_items = matrix.loc[target_user][matrix.loc[target_user] == 0].index
scores = matrix.loc[neighbor, unseen_items].sort_values(ascending=False)The starter uses a synthetic six-user tiny dataset and offers no offline evaluation, no item metadata or contextual signals, no ranking metrics or train/test split, and it does not address scalability, cold-start or business rules required for production.
A proposed extension: replace the toy table with real streaming behaviour, add item metadata and popularity-aware re-ranking, evaluate with Precision@K on a temporal train/test split, and serve recommendations with caching and a fallback.
This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.
