01 / THE IDEA

Course Recommendation in practice.

Course recommendation commonly combines user behaviour, course metadata and context to rank items a learner will find relevant. Typical failure cases include sparse enrolment data, cold-start courses or users, popularity bias and lack of diversity; offline ranking metrics and small-scale online tests help detect these.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed application: help learners discover relevant short courses by surfacing personalised suggestions alongside metadata and approvals. This extension requires additional data and engineering not supplied by the starter.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a course recommendation system project
step by step.

01

Prepare the data

Assemble user-course interactions and course metadata, deduplicate records, then split into train and test sets preserving user behaviour.

02

Build a baseline model

Compute a user-item matrix and use cosine similarity for a user-neighbour collaborative filter as a simple reproducible baseline.

03

Evaluate ranking quality

Measure Precision@K, Recall@K or NDCG on held-out interactions and inspect errors on sparse users and new items.

04

Plan deployment

Design caching and fallback rules, monitor latency and data drift, and capture user feedback for online evaluation.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the course recommendation system starter actually does.

The starter builds a tiny, hard-coded ratings DataFrame, pivots it to a user-item matrix, computes user-user cosine similarity, finds the single most similar neighbour for a target user, and recommends that neighbour's unseen items ordered by rating.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
matrix = ratings.pivot_table(index="user", columns="item", values="rating").fillna(0)
user_similarity = pd.DataFrame(
    cosine_similarity(matrix),
    index=matrix.index,
    columns=matrix.index,
)
Important limitation

This starter uses a six-user toy rating table with no course metadata, no train/test split, no offline ranking metrics, no cold-start handling, and no scalable index or deployment code; it therefore does not validate performance on real course data.

Where a course recommendation system project could go next.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Personalised Course Discovery: a pilot concept

Proposed extension: replace the toy ratings with real enrolment or clickstream logs, add course metadata and content signals, compare neighbourhood and matrix-factorisation methods, and expose ranked suggestions via an API with feedback capture.

WHO IT COULD SERVEOnline learning platforms and campus course advisors
FIRST MVPA web API that serves top-K personalised course suggestions per user, backed by a scheduled batch recomputation and a simple cache, with logging for feedback events.
KEY RISKRecommendations can reinforce popularity bias and miss new courses; a human reviewer should be available for curricular or regulatory checks and this system must not be used as the sole advisor for course selection.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a course recommendation system project puts on your resume.

  • Construct a user-item interaction matrix from raw ratings or enrolment logs.
  • Compute user-user cosine similarity and produce neighbour-based recommendations.
  • Evaluate ranking performance using Precision@K, Recall@K or NDCG on held-out interactions.
  • Identify production gaps: cold-starts, metadata integration, scalability and monitoring needs.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Course Recommendation System project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project?
Yes — it makes a solid applied final year project combining data processing, similarity or matrix-factorisation methods, evaluation and practical issues like cold-start and bias; scope can scale with dataset size.
What should I learn or prepare before starting?
Familiarity with Python, pandas and scikit-learn is needed, plus basics of recommendation techniques (collaborative filtering, content-based features), evaluation metrics and data preprocessing.
How do I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Start with offline metrics (precision@k, recall@k, NDCG) and simple experiments; a basic prototype can take 2–6 weeks, while robust evaluation and mitigation of cold-start or bias may take several more weeks.
