01 / THE IDEA

News recommendation in practice.

News recommendation uses user behaviour and item signals to suggest articles a reader may like. Common error cases include sparse user histories, popularity bias, and recommendations that reinforce narrow viewpoints.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A possible application: surface recent articles a reader has not seen yet, while allowing editors to apply business rules for freshness and diversity. This extension is not delivered by the supplied starter.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a news recommendation system project
step by step.

01

Prepare interaction data

Collect user–article interactions (clicks, reads, ratings) and pivot into a user–item matrix, filling missing values appropriately.

02

Compute similarities

Compute user or item similarity scores such as cosine similarity on the interaction matrix to find neighbourhoods.

03

Generate ranked suggestions

For a target user, aggregate neighbour preferences over unseen items and produce a ranked list for recommendation.

04

Evaluate and add rules

Measure ranking metrics (Precision@K, NDCG) and add freshness, diversity or safety filters before deployment.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the news recommendation system starter actually does.

The supplied starter builds a tiny user–item rating table from nine interactions, pivots it into a dense user–item matrix, computes cosine similarity between users, finds the most similar user to a target, and recommends that neighbour's unseen items sorted by their rating.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
matrix = ratings.pivot_table(index="user", columns="item", values="rating").fillna(0)
user_similarity = pd.DataFrame(
    cosine_similarity(matrix),
    index=matrix.index,
    columns=matrix.index,
)

target_user = "user_1"
neighbor = user_similarity[target_user].drop(target_user).idxmax()
unseen_items = matrix.loc[target_user][matrix.loc[target_user] == 0].index
scores = matrix.loc[neighbor, unseen_items].sort_values(ascending=False)
Important limitation

The starter uses a toy rating table with generic item IDs, not news articles or real clickstream data. It implements a single nearest-neighbour user-based recommendation and prints a small set of recommendations; it does not compute ranking metrics, handle cold starts, include item metadata, or address temporal freshness and diversity.

Where a news recommendation system project could go next.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

A production-minded news recommender

Proposed extension: replace the toy table with real clickstream or event logs, incorporate article metadata (section, timestamp), evaluate Precision@K and NDCG, and add freshness and diversity business rules before serving.

WHO IT COULD SERVENews publishers or personalised news apps
FIRST MVPServe a cached ranked list per user using neighbourhood scores with a freshness filter and basic diversity rules, plus simple offline evaluation (Precision@10, NDCG@10).
KEY RISKRecommendation loops and popularity bias can amplify a narrow set of articles; editors should supervise filtering and a human reviewer must remain responsible for content safety and editorial policies.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a news recommendation system project puts on your resume.

  • Pivot interaction logs into a user–item matrix and handle missing values.
  • Compute cosine similarity between users to form a neighbourhood-based recommender.
  • Produce a ranked list of unseen items for a target user based on neighbour ratings.
  • Explain the starter's limitations: toy data, no temporal handling, and no ranking metrics.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

News Recommendation System project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project?
Yes — this is a practical applied project idea that lets you explore recommender algorithms, evaluation metrics and system design; scope can scale from a simple prototype to a research-style report.
What skills and data do I need to implement it?
You should know Python, pandas and scikit-learn, and be comfortable with matrix operations and similarity metrics; realistic datasets (clickstreams or article metadata) improve results over toy examples.
How should I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Start by reproducing baseline recommendations, add features and measure precision/recall, diversity and novelty; a basic prototype can take a few weeks while a polished system with experiments may take a term.
