01 / THE IDEA

Conversational recommendation in practice.

Conversational recommendation systems interact with a user over multiple turns to elicit preferences and refine suggestions. They combine dialogue state, recent behaviour, item metadata and ranking models, and must handle session context, cold-start items and diverse intents.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed extension: a shopping assistant that asks a few clarifying questions, updates its candidate list in-session, and surfaces explainable suggestions for a human agent to confirm. This behaviour is not implemented in the supplied starter code.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a conversational recommendation system project
step by step.

01

Collect session-aware data

Record short dialogues, timestamps and intermediate user feedback alongside item impressions to build turn-level training examples.

02

Baseline ranking model

Start with a simple collaborative-filtering or content-similarity ranker for candidate generation and reserve session features for later re-ranking.

03

Evaluate offline and in simulation

Measure recall@K and NDCG for offline ranking, and run simulated multi-turn dialogues to test preference recovery and stability.

04

Prototype a conversational UI

Expose recommendations via a simple chat interface that logs user responses and allows manual correction by a human reviewer.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the conversational recommendation system starter actually does.

The supplied starter constructs a small user-item rating DataFrame, pivots it to a user-by-item matrix, computes cosine similarity between users, finds the most similar user to a target, and recommends that neighbour's highest-rated items that the target has not rated. It prints the neighbour and top recommendations.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
matrix = ratings.pivot_table(index="user", columns="item", values="rating").fillna(0)
user_similarity = pd.DataFrame(
    cosine_similarity(matrix),
    index=matrix.index,
    columns=matrix.index,
)

target_user = "user_1"
neighbor = user_similarity[target_user].drop(target_user).idxmax()
unseen_items = matrix.loc[target_user][matrix.loc[target_user] == 0].index
scores = matrix.loc[neighbor, unseen_items].sort_values(ascending=False)
Important limitation

The starter uses a tiny hand-crafted ratings table and a single-shot user-based collaborative filter; it contains no conversational/dialogue handling, no session context, no cold-start logic, no evaluation metrics, and is too small to support realistic performance claims or production deployment.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Conversational recommender: a pilot concept

Proposed extension: capture turn-level feedback in a chat UI, use session features to re-rank candidates from a collaborative filter, and record interaction logs for offline evaluation and A/B testing.

WHO IT COULD SERVEE-commerce retailers
FIRST MVPA web chat prototype that asks two clarifying questions, updates a candidate list from a collaborative-filtering backend, and lets a human reviewer accept or override the final suggestion.
KEY RISKCommon risks include popularity bias, poor handling of cold-start users/items, privacy of interaction logs and mismatched expectations; a human reviewer should validate recommendations before they influence critical decisions.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a conversational recommendation system project puts on your resume.

  • Construct a user-item rating matrix and compute user similarity with cosine distance.
  • Implement a basic neighbour-based recommender and produce top-N suggestions for a user.
  • Identify missing components for conversation: session state, turn handling and feedback capture.
  • Design a minimal conversational prototype that logs turns for offline evaluation.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Conversational Recommendation System project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project?
Yes — it’s a substantial applied topic that combines NLP, recommender algorithms and evaluation; scope can be scaled from a prototype to a full thesis depending on ambition.
What do I need to learn or prepare before starting?
Familiarity with Python, pandas and scikit-learn is essential; learn basics of dialogue state tracking, session modelling, similarity/ranking methods and how to design evaluation protocols.
How should I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Evaluate via held-out recommendation accuracy, conversational metrics (turns-to-satisfaction) and ablations; a minimal prototype can take 6–10 weeks, a robust system several months.
