01 / THE IDEA

Zero-shot Topic Classification in practice.

Zero-shot topic classification assigns one or more topic labels to text without task-specific labelled training data, typically by using a pretrained language or NLI model to match text against label descriptions. Key issues include label phrasing effects, overlapping topics, domain shift and evaluating confidence when ground-truth labels are unavailable.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed application: let enterprise knowledge teams tag documents with a flexible topic set without collecting labels. Human reviewers should stay in the loop to confirm or correct automated tags; this starter does not deliver that integration.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a zero-shot topic classification project
step by step.

01

Collect representative documents

Assemble domain texts and a controlled set of topic descriptions; include noisy and edge-case examples such as short messages and mixed-topic documents.

02

Baseline with pretrained models

Use a pretrained zero-shot classifier (e.g. Hugging Face zero-shot pipeline or NLI scoring) to score text against topic descriptions and return ranked labels with confidences.

03

Evaluate and error‑analyse

Measure precision@k and calibrate scores on a small labelled sample; inspect typical failures such as ambiguous wording and label wording sensitivity.

04

Design human review and deployment

Provide a UI for reviewers to accept or correct labels and log corrections for iterative improvement and monitoring.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the zero-shot topic classification starter actually does.

The supplied starter builds a supervised TF-IDF + LogisticRegression pipeline on six short, hand-written sentences with binary labels. It splits those sentences into train/test, fits the pipeline, prints a classification report, and shows one sample prediction. It does not implement zero-shot methods or use label descriptions for unseen topics.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
model = Pipeline(
    steps=[
        ("tfidf", TfidfVectorizer(ngram_range=(1, 2), min_df=1)),
        ("classifier", LogisticRegression(max_iter=1000)),
    ]
)

model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)
Important limitation

The code is a small supervised baseline with explicit binary labels on six short sentences; it does not perform zero-shot classification, does not use a pretrained NLI or zero-shot model, and the tiny labeled set cannot validate performance for topic labelling or domain generalisation.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Zero-shot Topic Classification: a pilot concept

A proposed extension is to replace the supervised baseline with a pretrained zero-shot approach (for example Hugging Face’s zero-shot-classification pipeline or NLI scoring using sentence-transformers), score documents against human-written topic descriptions, and surface top-k suggestions with confidence scores for human review.

WHO IT COULD SERVEEnterprise knowledge teams
FIRST MVPAn API that accepts text and a set of topic descriptions, returns ranked topic suggestions with confidences from a pretrained zero-shot model, and logs reviewer corrections for iterative improvement.
KEY RISKZero-shot topic labels can be sensitive to label wording and domain shift; mislabelling can surface irrelevant or harmful tags, so a human reviewer should confirm tags before any automated routing or enforcement.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a zero-shot topic classification project puts on your resume.

  • Explain the difference between supervised and zero-shot topic classification and when zero-shot is appropriate.
  • Build a TF-IDF + logistic-regression baseline and understand its limitations for unseen topics.
  • Integrate a pretrained zero-shot/NLI scorer to rank topic descriptions for new documents.
  • Design a small human-in-the-loop workflow to review suggestions and collect corrective labels for monitoring and improvement.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Zero-Shot Topic Classification project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project?
Yes — it's an advanced NLP topic that combines language models, evaluation and label design; expect to extend or replace the provided starter which is a simple supervised baseline.
What skills and tools will I need?
You should know Python, NLP fundamentals, model inference with HuggingFace, and scikit-learn for baselines; familiarity with prompt/label engineering and evaluation metrics helps.
How should I evaluate progress and timeline?
Start with baselines, implement a zero-shot pipeline using pretrained NLI/LM models, test on held-out or cross-domain data, and expect several weeks for experiments and analysis.
