Collect documents with entity and relation annotations or convert a public IE dataset to your domain; ensure samples include noisy, long and edge-case texts.
Extract structured facts. Inspect exact-match scores.
Information extraction (IE) identifies structured facts—entities, attributes and relations—from unstructured text. Typical challenges include overlapping mentions, document-level context, nested entities and noisy or domain-specific language. Evaluation often combines token/span-level metrics (precision, recall, F1) with exact-match or relation-level scores.

Information extraction (IE) identifies structured facts—entities, attributes and relations—from unstructured text. Typical challenges include overlapping mentions, document-level context, nested entities and noisy or domain-specific language. Evaluation often combines token/span-level metrics (precision, recall, F1) with exact-match or relation-level scores.
A proposed application: extract key contract clauses and parties to populate document summaries and downstream workflows. In production, extracted items should be presented with provenance and a human reviewer in the loop before any operational use.
Collect documents with entity and relation annotations or convert a public IE dataset to your domain; ensure samples include noisy, long and edge-case texts.
Start with a token-classification baseline (spaCy or transformer token tags) or a span-classification model and hold out a test set for exact-match evaluation.
Report token/span precision, recall and F1 plus relation exact-match; inspect frequent error types such as boundary errors and merged mentions.
Return extracted spans with source context and confidence scores so a human reviewer can confirm, correct or reject items before automated use.
The supplied starter splits six short, hand-written sentences with binary labels, fits a TF-IDF (unigram+bigram) vectoriser and a LogisticRegression pipeline, prints a classification report on the tiny test split, and shows a single sample prediction. It does not perform span extraction, entity labelling or relation extraction.
model = Pipeline(
steps=[
("tfidf", TfidfVectorizer(ngram_range=(1, 2), min_df=1)),
("classifier", LogisticRegression(max_iter=1000)),
]
)
model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)The starter data are six generic sentences with arbitrary binary labels and do not represent an information-extraction dataset. The code implements a document-level classifier (TF-IDF + logistic regression), not token/span labelling or relation prediction required for IE, so it cannot validate the extraction task described in the title.
A proposed extension: train a token- or span-level extractor (spaCy pipeline or transformer token-classifier) on annotated domain documents, provide relation classification, and expose results through a reviewable API that preserves provenance.
This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.
