01 / THE IDEA

Seq2Seq for text summarization in practice.

Seq2Seq summarisation trains a conditional generation model to map long source texts to shorter summaries. Key issues include factual consistency, handling long inputs, evaluation with ROUGE/ROUGE-L and human checks, and preventing model hallucination on factual documents.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed application: help content teams produce concise first drafts of summaries that a human editor reviews and corrects. The supplied starter does not deliver generation or a seq2seq model; this is a suggested extension.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a seq2seq text summarization project
step by step.

01

Assemble and clean data

Collect paired source–summary examples (news, reports or licences) and remove near-duplicates and truncation artefacts before splitting.

02

Build a seq2seq baseline

Fine-tune a Transformer encoder–decoder (e.g. BART/T5) or train a small RNN seq2seq model with attention, controlling input length and using teacher forcing.

03

Evaluate generation quality

Report ROUGE scores, inspect factual consistency and common failure modes such as hallucination and missing entities using manual examples.

04

Deploy with human oversight

Expose summaries via an editor API, log outputs and human corrections, and add monitoring for drift and degraded factuality.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the seq2seq text summarization starter actually does.

The supplied starter is a small text classification baseline: it vectorises six short sentences with TfidfVectorizer, fits a LogisticRegression classifier, prints a classification report on a 2–4 test split, and shows one sample prediction. It does not implement any seq2seq model, encoder–decoder architecture, or text generation.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
model = Pipeline(
    steps=[
        ("tfidf", TfidfVectorizer(ngram_range=(1, 2), min_df=1)),
        ("classifier", LogisticRegression(max_iter=1000)),
    ]
)

model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)
Important limitation

The code trains a TF-IDF + LogisticRegression classifier on six labelled sentences; it contains no encoder–decoder, no generation step, and no paired source–summary dataset required for seq2seq summarisation.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Seq2Seq summariser pilot

Proposed extension: fine-tune a small pre-trained encoder–decoder model (e.g. BART/T5) on a curated paired dataset, add beam search and length penalties, and provide an editor interface for human review.

WHO IT COULD SERVEContent teams and editors
FIRST MVPFine-tune a compact Transformer summariser on a small paired dataset, evaluate with ROUGE and selected human checks, and serve predictions to an editor UI for correction.
KEY RISKGeneration models can hallucinate facts or omit critical details; keep a human reviewer in the loop and do not use results for unreviewed legal or compliance decisions.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a seq2seq text summarization project puts on your resume.

  • Explain the seq2seq summarisation task and its typical encoder–decoder architectures.
  • Prepare paired source–summary datasets and handle long-input truncation and duplicates.
  • Fine-tune a Transformer encoder–decoder and evaluate outputs with ROUGE and targeted human checks.
  • Design a deployable pipeline with an editor API and monitoring for factual consistency and drift.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Seq2Seq Text Summarization project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project?
Yes — Seq2Seq summarization is a solid intermediate final year project that covers modelling, data handling and evaluation; plan experiments on datasets like CNN/DailyMail or XSum.
What skills and tools do I need to complete it?
You should know Python, PyTorch (or Hugging Face Transformers), NLP preprocessing, and evaluation metrics (ROUGE), plus basics of training, attention and handling long inputs.
How do I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Evaluate with ROUGE scores plus manual factuality checks and ablation studies; expect 8–16 weeks for dataset prep, baseline Seq2Seq, improvements and evaluation depending on scope.
