Define the task and data
Choose a sequence task (e.g. sentiment or sequence labelling) and prepare tokenised or patched inputs with a train/validation/test split.
Compute self-attention. Inspect attention outputs.
Self-attention computes pairwise interactions between positions in a sequence so representations can weight relevant context. Implementing it requires careful tensor shape handling, numerical stabilisation of softmax, and checks for degenerate attention (e.g. always-focused or uniform attention). Typical failure modes include overfitting on small data, collapsed heads, and unintended positional bias.

A proposed application: add a lightweight self-attention module to a sequence classifier (text, time series or image patches) to let the model focus on relevant positions. This extension is not implemented in the supplied starter code.
Choose a sequence task (e.g. sentiment or sequence labelling) and prepare tokenised or patched inputs with a train/validation/test split.
Write a multi-head self-attention layer with query/key/value projections, scaled dot-product attention, masking and dropout so it can be inserted into a model.
Train the model end-to-end on a small, representative dataset and keep checkpoints for head-wise inspection and reproducibility.
Measure task metrics (accuracy, F1 or mAP as appropriate) and inspect attention maps for collapsed heads, positional bias and failure cases.
The supplied starter creates a synthetic tabular classification dataset with sklearn.make_classification, places it in a pandas DataFrame, splits train/test, fits a Pipeline that scales features then trains a RandomForestClassifier, and prints a classification report.
model = Pipeline(
steps=[
("scale", StandardScaler()),
("classifier", RandomForestClassifier(n_estimators=250, random_state=RANDOM_STATE)),
]
)The starter contains no self-attention code: it uses scikit-learn RandomForest on a synthetic fixed-size feature vector dataset, not a sequence model, and does not use PyTorch, attention matrices, queries/keys/values, or sequence masking.
Proposed extension: implement a PyTorch multi-head self-attention layer, train a small transformer-style classifier on a sequence dataset (text or patched images), and add visualisation of attention maps to inspect what the model attends to.
This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.
