01 / THE IDEA

Meeting insights and action tracker in practice.

This project frames meeting-insight extraction as a supervised classification task and demonstrates a reproducible baseline pipeline. Useful extensions include extracting action items from transcripts, linking actions to owners and due dates, and monitoring model drift in production. Common failure modes include missing or noisy transcripts, ambiguous action statements, and class imbalance for rare but important action types.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed application: surface probable action items from meeting transcripts so a human reviewer can confirm and assign them. The supplied starter does not perform NLP or extract actions; it only demonstrates a classification pipeline on synthetic data.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a meeting insights and action tracker project
step by step.

01

Collect representative data

Gather meeting transcripts and human-labelled insight/action tags, ensuring coverage of different meeting types and speakers.

02

Prepare features and labels

Extract textual features (e.g. sentence embeddings) and temporal or speaker metadata, and address class imbalance with sampling or loss weighting.

03

Train a baseline classifier

Fit a reproducible pipeline that includes feature scaling, a classifier and cross-validation; log metrics such as F1 for each action class.

04

Human-in-the-loop review

Deploy predictions to a review interface where users confirm, correct and assign actions; record corrections to improve the model.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the meeting insights and action tracker starter actually does.

The supplied starter generates a synthetic numeric classification dataset with sklearn.make_classification, splits it, builds a Pipeline with StandardScaler and RandomForestClassifier, fits the model and prints a classification report. It does not read meeting transcripts, perform NLP, or extract action items.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
model = Pipeline(
    steps=[
        ("scale", StandardScaler()),
        ("classifier", RandomForestClassifier(n_estimators=250, random_state=RANDOM_STATE)),
    ]
)

model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)
Important limitation

The starter uses synthetic numeric features created by make_classification and therefore does not implement transcript processing, action-item extraction, speaker attribution, nor any of the text-based modelling needed for real meeting-insight tasks. Results on the synthetic data do not indicate performance on real meeting data.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Meeting insights: a pilot concept

Proposed extension: convert meeting transcripts into sentence-level features (embeddings or TF-IDF), label sentences with insight/action types, and train a multiclass classifier to surface candidate actions for human review.

WHO IT COULD SERVEOperations teams and project managers
FIRST MVPA small web interface that ingests meeting transcripts, highlights candidate action sentences, allows users to confirm/assign them, and stores corrected labels for continuous retraining.
KEY RISKIncorrectly suggesting or auto-assigning actions could cause missed responsibilities; keep a human reviewer in the loop and do not use the prototype for automated compliance or critical operational decisions.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a meeting insights and action tracker project puts on your resume.

  • Design a supervised labelling scheme for meeting insights and action items.
  • Preprocess data and convert meeting text to numeric features suitable for classification.
  • Train and evaluate a reproducible sklearn pipeline with sensible metrics such as per-class F1.
  • Plan a human-in-the-loop deployment with correction logging and monitoring for data drift.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Meeting Insights and Action Tracker project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project?
Yes — it fits an advanced final year project: you can extend the baseline to handle transcripts, extract action items, attribute speakers and build evaluation pipelines.
What skills and tools will I need to complete it?
Familiarity with Python, NLP (tokenisation, embeddings), scikit-learn, pandas, and evaluation techniques; experience with transcript formats and simple frontend or database integration helps.
How should I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Start by replacing synthetic data with real transcripts, build extraction and classification modules, and measure precision/recall for action items; expect 3–6 months depending on scope and dataset availability.
