01 / THE IDEA

Business process mining in practice.

Business process mining analyses event logs to reconstruct process flows, find common paths and surface deviations or bottlenecks. Key challenges include noisy or missing timestamps, variant explosion for complex processes, and mapping raw events to meaningful process steps.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed application for operations teams: surface frequent end-to-end paths, time-to-completion distributions and exceptions so a human process owner can prioritise investigations. Any automated change should remain under human review.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a business process mining dashboard project
step by step.

01

Collect and clean logs

Assemble event logs (case id, activity, timestamp) and normalise timestamps, remove duplicates and map raw events to canonical activity names.

02

Extract features

Derive sequence-based features (prefixes, traces), time-between-events and aggregated per-case statistics for downstream modelling.

03

Baseline model

Fit a simple classifier or anomaly detector to predict outcomes or flag unusual traces, and validate with held-out cases.

04

Dashboard and review

Visualise common paths, time distributions and flagged exceptions; provide a review interface for subject-matter experts to confirm issues.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the business process mining dashboard starter actually does.

The supplied starter generates a synthetic tabular classification dataset using sklearn.make_classification, builds a pipeline with StandardScaler and RandomForestClassifier, fits it and prints a scikit-learn classification report. It does not parse event logs, reconstruct process traces, or compute sequence-based process metrics.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
model = Pipeline(
    steps=[
        ("scale", StandardScaler()),
        ("classifier", RandomForestClassifier(n_estimators=250, random_state=RANDOM_STATE)),
    ]
)

model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)
Important limitation

The starter uses synthetic numeric features from make_classification rather than event logs or process traces. It therefore cannot demonstrate process discovery, trace visualisation, time-between-events analysis or realistic exception detection for process mining.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Process Mining Dashboard: a pilot concept

A proposed extension: replace the synthetic data with real event logs (CSV or XES), run process discovery to extract common traces, compute per-case timing metrics and build an interactive dashboard that highlights bottlenecks and candidate exceptions for human review.

WHO IT COULD SERVEOperations teams
FIRST MVPAn interactive dashboard that loads event logs, shows the top N process variants, visualises cycle times and lists flagged exceptions for manual inspection.
KEY RISKIncorrect or noisy trace extraction can mislead decisions; the dashboard should present evidence and keep a human process-owner in charge. Do not use the prototype to automatically change live processes without thorough validation.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a business process mining dashboard project puts on your resume.

  • Prepare and clean event logs into a case-activity-timestamp table suitable for process mining.
  • Extract simple sequence and timing features and build a baseline classifier or anomaly detector.
  • Interpret per-path and per-case visualisations to identify bottlenecks and deviations.
  • Explain this starter-code limitation: it uses synthetic classification data rather than real event logs.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Business Process Mining Dashboard project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project for engineering students?
Yes — it is an advanced final year project idea that combines data engineering, process discovery and visualisation; expect substantial work on preprocessing, algorithms and UI/UX.
What tools and knowledge do I need to start?
You should be comfortable with Python, pandas for event-log manipulation, process mining concepts, and visualisation libraries; familiarity with scikit-learn helps for clustering or anomaly detection.
How should I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Measure success by ability to parse event logs, reconstruct traces, detect variants/bottlenecks and produce interactive dashboard views; plan several months for a robust implementation and experiments.
