Fortinet Training Online.
Fortinet NSE 4 — 30 days, $799. Labs run on real FortiGate 80F appliances on FortiOS 7.4, racked in Bangalore and reachable 24×7 over VPN. Before you read further, something most providers will not tell you: Fortinet gives away most of its NSE courseware for free. The honest reason to pay anyone here is hardware access and a fixed schedule — not the content. The NSE 4 exam (~$400) is paid to Fortinet separately.
Is Fortinet training free?
A lot of it is, and that is genuinely unusual among firewall vendors. Fortinet made its entire NSE self-paced catalogue free in 2020 and has kept most of it free since. The Fortinet Training Institute hosts NSE 1 through NSE 3 plus substantial NSE 4 material at no cost, and Fortinet runs free certification programmes for veterans and students.
What is not free: exam vouchers. What the free courseware does not include: meaningful hands-on time with real appliances.
If your budget is zero, go to the Fortinet Training Institute rather than paying us or anyone else. We would rather say that plainly than have you find out afterwards.

Can I practise FortiGate for free?
Yes. Fortinet publishes FortiGate VM trial images that run in VMware, VirtualBox, KVM or a cloud instance. For policy configuration, NAT, UTM profiles and SSL VPN, a VM-based FortiGate is perfectly adequate — and for NSE 4 specifically it covers most of the blueprint.
Two gaps. Hardware-specific behaviour — throughput characteristics, hardware-accelerated inspection, and the NP and CP offload processors — exists only on physical units. And HA clustering needs at least two appliances to behave authentically, which most home labs cannot produce.
What hardware do the labs run on?
FortiGate 80F appliances running FortiOS 7.4, racked in Bangalore, reachable 24×7 over
vpn.networkershome.com.
Physical units matter for exactly two parts of this syllabus: HA clustering, and the hardware-offload behaviour a VM image does not have. Everything else you could legitimately learn on a VM.
The Fortinet units sit in the same rack as Palo Alto PA-Series, Cisco ASA with Firepower, and Check Point R82 appliances. That is what makes the multi-vendor comparison in the later sessions real rather than theoretical — and multi-vendor firewall experience is what actually separates candidates in interviews.
Is Fortinet certification worth it?
Depends on the market you are aiming at, and the honest answer is not "always yes."
Fortinet holds strong share in mid-market enterprises and among managed service providers. NSE 4 appears constantly in job descriptions from MSPs, regional integrators and mid-size companies. It appears less at large enterprises that standardised on Palo Alto or Cisco.
So: targeting MSP or mid-market work, NSE 4 is arguably better value than PCNSE — the training is largely free and the exam is cheaper. Targeting Fortune 500 security teams, PCNSE tends to carry more weight.
The strongest position is holding both. Multi-vendor is the differentiator.
What comes after NSE 4?
NSE 7. Most institutes stop at NSE 4, which is where the actual differentiation begins — Security Fabric, SD-WAN and ZTNA are what mid-market employers are deploying right now. The NSE 7 track runs as a separate five-week programme:
Advanced VDOMs · Complex Routing · Traffic Shaping · Policy Optimization
Advanced Threat Protection · Sandboxing · Zero-Day Prevention · SSL Deep Inspection
Fortinet SD-WAN · ZTNA Architecture · Application Steering · Performance SLA
Central Management · FortiAnalyzer · Automation Stitches · REST API
Enterprise Design · Troubleshooting · Case Studies · NSE7 Exam Prep
What do Fortinet-skilled roles pay in the US?
| Role | Experience | US range |
|---|---|---|
| Firewall / Network Security Engineer | 0–2 yrs | $70,000–95,000 |
| Network Security Engineer (NSE4+) | 2–4 yrs | $95,000–130,000 |
| Senior Security Engineer | 4–7 yrs | $125,000–165,000 |
| Security Architect | 7+ yrs | $155,000–205,000 |
How to read this table: US labour-market reference ranges from public US job postings — not Networkers Home placement outcomes. This is a certification course, not a placement programme, and the institute does not run a US hiring pipeline.
How do US students attend?
Recorded and posted within ~30 minutes.
Identical syllabus and appliance access.
When this is the wrong course for you
- Your budget is tight. Fortinet's own free NSE courseware plus a FortiGate VM covers most of NSE 4 at zero cost. That is the genuinely correct answer for a lot of people.
- You are targeting large-enterprise security teams. Palo Alto's PCNSE usually carries more weight there.
- You already run FortiGate daily at work and just need exam drilling. Buy a practice-exam bundle.
- You need US placement support. This is a certification course.
Prefer one student, one instructor? This course can also be taken one-on-one — you set the schedule and the instructor works to your pace instead of the group's. Flat $1,299, with live captions and translation across 15+ languages.
Fortinet training online — frequently asked
Is Fortinet training free?
A meaningful amount of it is, and this is genuinely unusual among firewall vendors. Fortinet made its entire NSE self-paced training catalogue free in 2020 and has kept most of it free since — the Fortinet Training Institute hosts NSE 1 through NSE 3 plus substantial NSE 4 course material at no cost. Fortinet also runs the Free Training Initiative and gives free certification to veterans and students through various programmes. What is not free is exam vouchers, and what the free courseware does not include is meaningful hands-on time with real appliances. If your budget is zero, start with the Fortinet Training Institute rather than paying anyone — that is the honest answer.
Is there free Fortinet firewall training available?
Yes. Beyond the free NSE courseware, Fortinet publishes FortiGate VM trial images you can run in VMware, VirtualBox, KVM or a cloud instance. A VM-based FortiGate handles policy configuration, NAT, UTM profiles and SSL VPN perfectly well for learning purposes. The limits are hardware-specific behaviour — throughput characteristics, hardware-accelerated inspection, and the NP/CP offload processors that only exist on physical units — and HA clustering, which needs at least two units to practise properly. For NSE 4 specifically, a VM lab covers most of the blueprint.
How much does Fortinet certification cost?
The NSE 4 exam runs about $400 USD through Pearson VUE, paid directly to Fortinet. Training costs vary widely: Fortinet's own self-paced NSE courseware is free, Authorized Training Centers charge roughly $2,000 to $4,000 for instructor-led classes, and independent providers sit in between. Networkers Home's NSE 4 program is $799 for a 30-day live cohort with access to real FortiGate 80F hardware. Given how much free courseware Fortinet publishes, the honest case for paying anything is hardware access and a fixed schedule — not the content itself.
Is Fortinet certification worth it?
It depends heavily on your market. Fortinet holds very strong share in mid-market enterprises and among managed service providers, which means NSE 4 shows up constantly in job descriptions from MSPs, regional integrators and mid-size companies — less so at large enterprises that standardised on Palo Alto or Cisco. If you are targeting MSP or mid-market work, NSE 4 is arguably better value than PCNSE because the training is largely free and the exam is cheaper. If you are targeting Fortune 500 security teams, Palo Alto's PCNSE tends to carry more weight. The strongest position is holding both, since multi-vendor firewall experience is what actually distinguishes candidates.
What hardware do the labs run on?
FortiGate 80F appliances running FortiOS 7.4, racked in Bangalore and reachable 24×7 over VPN. Physical units matter for two parts of the syllabus in particular: HA clustering, which needs real paired devices to behave authentically, and the hardware-offload behaviour that a VM image simply does not have. The lab also sits alongside Palo Alto PA-Series, Cisco ASA with Firepower and Check Point R82 appliances, which is what makes the multi-vendor comparison in the later sessions possible rather than theoretical.
What time do the live classes run for US students?
US-East weeknights run Tuesday and Thursday, 7:00–9:30 PM ET. US-West weekends run Saturday and Sunday, 10:00 AM–2:00 PM PT. Both cover the identical five-week syllabus. Sessions are recorded and posted within about 30 minutes. Console access to the FortiGate appliances is 24×7 via vpn.networkershome.com, at roughly 180–240 ms US latency — imperceptible for CLI and web-UI work.
