01 / THE IDEA

Stock fundamentals ranking in practice.

A fundamentals ranking engine uses company financial attributes to score and order stocks for investment or screening. Key issues include feature construction from filings, normalising across firms and sectors, handling missing or delayed inputs, and measuring downstream portfolio risk and return.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed decision-support tool for research analysts: surface top candidates by fundamentals for manual review. A human reviewer must remain in charge; this prototype is not for real trading, investment or portfolio-allocation decisions without rigorous backtesting, compliance and operational controls.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a stock fundamentals ranking engine project
step by step.

01

Collect and normalise fundamentals

Extract structured features (ratios, growth rates) from filings and price histories, and normalise by sector and firm size.

02

Build a reproducible baseline

Create a simple scoring model (e.g. weighted linear score or ordinals) with clear preprocessing pipelines and train/test splits.

03

Evaluate ranking quality

Assess metrics such as rank correlation (Spearman), return deciles and simulated Sharpe over a backtest window, and inspect failure modes.

04

Define a reviewable output

Produce an explanation panel showing contributing features, comparable peers and reason codes for each ranked stock.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the stock fundamentals ranking engine starter actually does.

The supplied starter builds a toy user–item rating matrix from six synthetic ratings, computes cosine similarity between users, finds the most similar user to a target, and recommends items that the neighbour rated but the target has not. It uses pandas pivot_table and sklearn.metrics.pairwise.cosine_similarity and prints three recommended item scores.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
matrix = ratings.pivot_table(index="user", columns="item", values="rating").fillna(0)
user_similarity = pd.DataFrame(
    cosine_similarity(matrix),
    index=matrix.index,
    columns=matrix.index,
)
Important limitation

The starter uses synthetic user–item ratings and a nearest-neighbour recommender; it does not load company financials, compute fundamentals-based features, or evaluate stock-ranking metrics. Therefore it does not implement the titled fundamentals ranking task.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Prototype fundamentals ranking: a proposed extension

Proposed extension: replace the synthetic ratings with a dataset of company fundamentals and market prices, compute standard financial ratios and z-scores, and build a weighted scoring or learning-to-rank baseline with backtested performance.

WHO IT COULD SERVEEquity research teams
FIRST MVPA reproducible pipeline that ingests fundamentals and prices, builds normalised features, returns a ranked list with contributing feature explanations, and reports simple backtest metrics.
KEY RISKFinancial decisions are sensitive: model errors, look-ahead bias or data leakage can cause real portfolio losses. A human reviewer must remain in charge; do not use this prototype for real trading, investment or portfolio-allocation decisions without thorough validation, backtesting and compliance checks.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a stock fundamentals ranking engine project puts on your resume.

  • Construct and normalise company-level fundamental features from filings and prices.
  • Build a simple reproducible ranking baseline and pipeline using pandas and scikit-learn.
  • Measure ranking quality with Spearman correlation and basic backtest return metrics.
  • Explain limitations of a prototype that was supplied as a synthetic recommender demo.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Stock Fundamentals Ranking Engine project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project?
Yes — it is suitable as an applied final year project that combines data engineering, feature design, and model evaluation; expect to build pipelines and backtest frameworks.
What skills or tools will I need to complete it?
You should know Python, pandas for data wrangling, scikit-learn for modelling, SQL or web APIs for fetching filings, and basics of finance like ratios and portfolio metrics.
How should I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Evaluate by measuring ranking stability, backtest returns and risk metrics, and handling missing data; a realistic timeline is 8–16 weeks depending on data access and scope.
