01 / THE IDEA

Merger and Acquisition Target Screener in practice.

A target-screener frames an M&A decision as a prediction or ranking problem and starts with a simple, auditable baseline. Real deployments require careful feature design from financial statements, event data and prices, and evaluation metrics that reflect transaction costs and asymmetric decision consequences.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed use: help corporate development teams prioritise possible targets for further human due diligence by flagging companies that match predefined strategic and financial criteria. Any decision should keep a human reviewer in the loop; this project does not provide investment advice.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a merger and acquisition target screener project
step by step.

01

Define the screening target

Decide the prediction label (e.g. high-priority for outreach) and the inputs required from filings, prices and industry signals.

02

Prepare representative data

Collect and clean financial indicators and event labels; handle missing values and align features to the prediction window.

03

Train a reproducible baseline

Fit a simple pipeline such as scaling plus a tree-based classifier and keep code, random seeds and feature lists auditable.

04

Evaluate with decision-aware metrics

Use metrics that capture asymmetric costs (precision at k, AUC, or expected financial impact) and inspect false positives manually.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the merger and acquisition target screener starter actually does.

The supplied starter generates a synthetic binary classification dataset with sklearn.make_classification, builds a Pipeline with StandardScaler and RandomForestClassifier, fits it, and prints a sklearn classification report. It does not load financial data, filings, market prices, or M&A labels.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
model = Pipeline(
    steps=[
        ("scale", StandardScaler()),
        ("classifier", RandomForestClassifier(n_estimators=250, random_state=RANDOM_STATE)),
    ]
)

model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)
Important limitation

The starter uses synthetic features from make_classification rather than financial or transaction data, so model performance and behaviour do not reflect real M&A screening. No domain-specific features, labels or cost-sensitive evaluation are present, and a synthetic test set cannot validate a production screener.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

M&A Screener: proposed pilot

A possible extension: replace the synthetic data with curated features from SEC filings, price series and deal databases, then evaluate models on historical deals with a decision-cost metric and a human-in-the-loop review panel.

WHO IT COULD SERVECorporate development teams
FIRST MVPA small API that scores a candidate list and presents the top-k companies with feature explanations and links to source documents for human review.
KEY RISKFinancial-domain outcomes are sensitive; this project should not be used for live investment or transaction decisions without expert human review, legal checks and backtested, auditable evaluation.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a merger and acquisition target screener project puts on your resume.

  • Define a binary screening label and align inputs from filings and price windows for that label.
  • Implement a reproducible sklearn pipeline with scaling and a tree-based classifier and fixed random seeds.
  • Evaluate classifiers with decision-aware metrics such as precision-at-k or a financial-impact proxy.
  • Describe the gap between a synthetic prototype and a production system that uses real financial datasets and monitoring.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Merger and Acquisition Target Screener project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project for CSE or engineering students?
Yes — it suits students interested in applied finance and machine learning; focus on feature engineering, model interpretability and careful evaluation rather than only model training.
What tools and knowledge do I need to complete this project?
Familiarity with Python, pandas and scikit-learn is essential; you should also learn basic accounting metrics, time-series handling and evaluation metrics that reflect transaction costs and asymmetric outcomes.
How should I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Start with data collection and feature design, then baseline models and realistic evaluation; a basic implementation and analysis can take 8–14 weeks depending on data access and scope.
