01 / THE IDEA

Signature verification in practice.

Signature verification is a binary or one-to-many authentication task: decide whether a presented signature matches a claimed identity. Important issues are intra-person variation, different pens and surfaces, skilled forgeries, enrolment size per signer, and operational thresholds that trade false acceptances against false rejections.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed extension: verify signatures on banking forms or delivery receipts to flag likely forgeries for human review. Because this concerns financial and biometric checks, a human should remain in the loop and any automated decision must be reviewed before critical actions.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a signature verification system project
step by step.

01

Collect labelled pairs

Gather genuine and forged signatures per signer and split into enrolment, train and holdout sets; avoid mixing writers across splits.

02

Preprocess and augment

Normalise scale, deskew and threshold images; add augmentations that mimic pen pressure and rotation to model intra-person variation.

03

Train a verification model

Use a metric-learning approach (Siamese or triplet network) or a one-class model per signer, and tune a verification threshold on validation pairs.

04

Evaluate operating behaviour

Report FAR, FRR, ROC/AUC and per-signer performance, and examine skilled forgeries and low-quality scans as failure cases.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the signature verification system starter actually does.

The supplied starter loads sklearn's digits dataset, splits it, fits a RandomForestClassifier to predict digit labels (0–9), then prints a classification report and displays a confusion matrix. It does not use signature images, forgery/genuine pairs, or any verification thresholding.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
digits = load_digits()
X_train, X_test, y_train, y_test = train_test_split(
    digits.data,
    digits.target,
    test_size=0.25,
    random_state=42,
    stratify=digits.target,
)

model = RandomForestClassifier(n_estimators=300, random_state=42)
model.fit(X_train, y_train)
Important limitation

The code trains a multiclass digit recogniser on the sklearn digits dataset rather than a signature verifier; it lacks signature data, pairwise/genuine-vs-forgery labels, preprocessing steps for scanned signatures, and verification-specific models or thresholding.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Signature Verification: a pilot concept

A proposed extension is to collect genuine and forged signature pairs per signer and train a Siamese or triplet network to produce similarity scores, then deploy an enrolment API and a verification endpoint with tunable thresholds and audit logging.

WHO IT COULD SERVEBanks and document-handling services
FIRST MVPProvide an enrolment interface that stores signer templates, a verification API that returns a similarity score and recommended threshold decision, and a small dashboard for human reviewers to inspect flagged cases.
KEY RISKThis is a sensitive biometric/financial domain: keep a human reviewer in the loop. Risks include false acceptance of skilled forgeries, bias from limited enrolment samples, degraded performance on low-quality scans, and legal/privacy requirements for storing signatures.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a signature verification system project puts on your resume.

  • Define signature verification as a measurable ML task and collect genuine/forgery pairs with appropriate splits.
  • Preprocess scanned signatures and apply augmentations that mimic real-world pen and paper variation.
  • Train and tune a metric-learning or per-signer model and select operating thresholds using FAR/FRR.
  • Evaluate operational metrics such as FAR, FRR and per-signer failure cases including skilled forgeries and poor-quality scans.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Signature Verification System project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project?
Yes — signature verification is a practical applied computer vision topic with clear evaluation criteria and scope adjustments to fit a semester-long final year project.
What skills, data and tools will I need?
You should know Python, OpenCV for image preprocessing, feature engineering or CNNs for representations, and scikit-learn or PyTorch for modelling; obtain a signature dataset or collect genuine and forged samples.
How should I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Benchmark with ROC, EER, FAR/FRR and verification accuracy on held-out signers; a baseline and experiments can take 2–4 months depending on dataset size and model complexity.
