01 / THE IDEA

Retrieval-Augmented QA in practice.

Retrieval-augmented question answering combines a retrieval step over a document collection with a reader model that composes answers from retrieved passages. Key challenges include retrieval recall for edge cases, faithful answer composition (avoiding hallucinations), and latency/throughput trade-offs in production.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed extension: a question-answering assistant over an enterprise document store to help staff find policy or contract clauses quickly. For any operational use, a human reviewer must validate answers; the supplied starter does not implement retrieval or reader models.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a retrieval-augmented question answering project
step by step.

01

Collect and index documents

Assemble a representative document corpus (policies, contracts or help articles) and create a cleaned text index with metadata for retrieval.

02

Build retrieval baseline

Start with sparse TF-IDF or dense vector embeddings plus a nearest-neighbour index to fetch candidate passages for each question.

03

Add a reader model

Fine-tune or prompt a reader model that conditions on retrieved passages to generate concise answers; track exact-match and faithfulness errors.

04

Evaluate and guardrails

Measure retrieval recall and answer faithfulness, inspect hallucinations, and add a human-in-the-loop review step before any corrective action.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the retrieval-augmented question answering starter actually does.

The supplied starter does not implement retrieval-augmented QA. It trains a TF-IDF + LogisticRegression classifier on six short, hand-written sentences with binary labels, prints a classification report on a tiny test split, and shows one sample prediction. There is no document index, retrieval step, or reader/generation model in the code.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
model = Pipeline(
    steps=[
        ("tfidf", TfidfVectorizer(ngram_range=(1, 2), min_df=1)),
        ("classifier", LogisticRegression(max_iter=1000)),
    ]
)

model.fit(X_train, y_train)
Important limitation

The starter is a small text-classification pipeline trained on six generic sentences and binary labels; it does not perform retrieval over a document corpus nor generate answers from retrieved passages. The tiny dataset and test split cannot demonstrate retrieval quality, answer faithfulness, or real QA performance.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Retrieval-Augmented QA: a pilot concept

A proposed extension is a small pilot that indexes domain documents (e.g. policies), implements a sparse or dense retriever to return passages, and uses a reader model or LLM prompt that conditions on those passages to produce answers with a human review step for verification.

WHO IT COULD SERVEInternal knowledge teams or policy teams in enterprises
FIRST MVPIndex a modest document set, run TF-IDF and embedding-based retrieval to return top-k passages for a question, and render reader-generated answers alongside source passages and confidence indicators for a human reviewer.
KEY RISKRisk of confidently incorrect or hallucinated answers; require a human reviewer for any sensitive or high-stakes queries and do not use the prototype for legal, clinical or financial decisions without expert sign-off.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a retrieval-augmented question answering project puts on your resume.

  • Explain the retrieval-augmented QA pipeline and why retrieval improves grounding for answers.
  • Implement a simple sparse retriever baseline and measure passage-recall on held-out questions.
  • Integrate a reader step that conditions on retrieved passages and track faithfulness and exact-match metrics.
  • Design a human-in-the-loop review workflow to catch hallucinations and calibrate answer confidence.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Retrieval-Augmented Question Answering project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project for CSE students?
Yes — it’s an advanced NLP practice that combines IR and reading comprehension components, suitable if you’re comfortable with information retrieval, embeddings and evaluation.
What should I learn or prepare before starting?
You should study dense retrieval (embeddings, FAISS), passage scoring, transformer readers, evaluation metrics, and Python ML tooling; familiarity with scikit-learn is helpful for baselines.
How do I evaluate progress or estimate time required?
Start with a retrieval baseline and a simple reader, measure recall@k and QA metrics (exact match/F1), and expect several weeks to build and tune a robust pipeline depending on dataset size.
