Collect and annotate contracts
Assemble representative contract documents and annotate clause spans and types at token or character offsets; include examples of long clauses and noisy inputs.
Extract contract clauses. Assign clause categories.
Contract clause extraction is a span-labelling or sequence-labelling task: identify clause boundaries in contract text and assign clause types (eg confidentiality, termination). Key challenges include long documents, variable clause wording, overlapping clauses, OCR noise and domain-specific vocabulary.

Contract clause extraction is a span-labelling or sequence-labelling task: identify clause boundaries in contract text and assign clause types (eg confidentiality, termination). Key challenges include long documents, variable clause wording, overlapping clauses, OCR noise and domain-specific vocabulary.
A proposed application is a reviewer-facing tool that highlights extracted clauses and suggests categories to speed contract review; a human lawyer or paralegal must verify every suggested clause before any legal decision. The supplied starter does not implement this functionality.
Assemble representative contract documents and annotate clause spans and types at token or character offsets; include examples of long clauses and noisy inputs.
Prototype a span or sequence-labelling model (eg transformer fine-tuning for token classification or a span-prediction head) and compare with rule-based baselines.
Report token-level F1 and exact-match clause extraction scores per clause type, and inspect qualitative errors like missed boundaries and merged clauses.
Expose predicted spans and confidence scores in an interface that lets reviewers accept, correct or reject extractions and export verified clauses.
The supplied starter is a tiny binary text classifier: it splits six hand-written, generic sentences with binary labels, fits a TF-IDF (unigram+bigram) vectoriser and a LogisticRegression pipeline, prints a classification report on a small test split, and shows one sample prediction. It does not perform span detection, token labelling, or clause-type classification on contract text.
model = Pipeline(
steps=[
("tfidf", TfidfVectorizer(ngram_range=(1, 2), min_df=1)),
("classifier", LogisticRegression(max_iter=1000)),
]
)
model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)The code is not a clause-extraction implementation. Clause extraction requires token/span annotations and a sequence-labelling or span-prediction model; the starter uses a six-sentence binary classification dataset unrelated to contracts. The dataset is far too small to evaluate extraction performance and its labels do not map to clause spans or clause types.
A proposed extension is to collect annotated contract documents and fine-tune a transformer for token classification or train a span-detection model to output clause boundaries and types, with a human-in-the-loop verification interface.
This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.
