Collect and label data
Assemble image–recipe pairs with structured ingredient lists and step text; include diverse cuisines, plating styles and portion sizes.
Generate recipes from food images. Judge the predicted recipe.
A recipe generator from food images aims to map an image of a dish to a structured cooking recipe (ingredients, quantities, preparation steps). Key challenges include visual ambiguity, ingredient detection, portion estimation and producing coherent step-by-step instructions.

A recipe generator from food images aims to map an image of a dish to a structured cooking recipe (ingredients, quantities, preparation steps). Key challenges include visual ambiguity, ingredient detection, portion estimation and producing coherent step-by-step instructions.
A proposed application: help home cooks get starting recipes from a photo of their plate. In any real setting a human should review and correct ingredient lists and instructions before following them.
Assemble image–recipe pairs with structured ingredient lists and step text; include diverse cuisines, plating styles and portion sizes.
Start with an image encoder (CLIP or ViT) and a text decoder (transformer) trained on image–caption pairs, then fine-tune on recipe text.
Use retrieval metrics (Recall@K) for ingredient grounding and BLEU/ROUGE for instruction quality, plus human usefulness scoring for safety.
Expose predicted ingredients and steps for users to edit, and log corrections for iterative dataset improvements.
The supplied starter loads the scikit-learn digits dataset, splits it, fits a RandomForestClassifier, prints a scikit-learn classification report and displays a confusion matrix. It does not process food images, nor does it implement image–text modelling or recipe generation.
digits = load_digits()
X_train, X_test, y_train, y_test = train_test_split(
digits.data,
digits.target,
test_size=0.25,
random_state=42,
stratify=digits.target,
)The starter uses the digits (handwritten numerals) dataset and a RandomForest classifier; it is a generic vision classification example and provides no image–text pairing, captioning, retrieval or generation required for a recipe-from-image system. Results on digits do not indicate performance on food images or recipe generation.
Proposed extension: fine-tune an image encoder together with a recipe-text decoder on curated image–recipe pairs, then add an ingredient grounding head that returns detected ingredients with confidence scores for user review.
This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.
