01 / THE IDEA

Fashion recommendation in practice.

Multimodal fashion recommendation combines item images and textual metadata to produce personalised suggestions. Robust prototypes handle cold-start items with visual features, respect business rules for diversity and size availability, and measure ranking quality with offline metrics such as Recall@K and hit rate.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed styling assistant for online shoppers: suggest visually similar items and complementing pieces using image embeddings and product descriptions, with a human-in-the-loop to review safety and commercial constraints. This extension is not implemented by the supplied starter.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a fashion recommendation with images and text project
step by step.

01

Collect and label multimodal data

Assemble product images, titles and descriptions, plus interaction logs or explicit ratings; align images with the correct text and remove duplicates.

02

Encode images and text

Build or reuse a vision-language encoder (for example CLIP) to produce comparable embeddings for images and textual metadata.

03

Build a ranking pipeline

Index item embeddings (FAISS or similar) and combine content-similarity scores with collaborative signals or business rules for diversity and size availability.

04

Evaluate ranking quality

Measure Recall@K and hit rate on a held-out set and inspect failure modes such as size mismatches, visual noise, and label drift.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the fashion recommendation with images and text starter actually does.

The supplied starter builds a tiny user-item rating table from nine toy rows, pivots it into a user-item matrix, computes cosine similarity between users, finds the nearest neighbour to a target user and recommends unseen items from that neighbour's ratings. It does not load or process images or text, nor does it use any multimodal encoder.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
matrix = ratings.pivot_table(index="user", columns="item", values="rating").fillna(0)
user_similarity = pd.DataFrame(
    cosine_similarity(matrix),
    index=matrix.index,
    columns=matrix.index,
)
Important limitation

The starter uses only a small artificial user-rating table and user-based collaborative filtering; it contains no image or text processing, no multimodal embeddings, and no train/validation split. The tiny toy dataset cannot validate recommendation performance for real fashion items or multimodal objectives.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Multimodal fashion recommender: a pilot concept

A proposed extension is a hybrid recommender that encodes product images and descriptions with a vision-language model (for example CLIP), indexes item embeddings with FAISS, and blends content-similarity with interaction-based signals to handle cold-start and personalised ranking.

WHO IT COULD SERVEE‑commerce fashion retailers
FIRST MVPIndex CLIP image and text embeddings for the catalogue, expose a search endpoint that returns top‑K visually and textually similar items, and log user clicks for online evaluation.
KEY RISKRecommendations may surface biased or inappropriate items and can fail on size/stock mismatches; a human reviewer or business-rule layer should approve merchandising-sensitive outputs before automated exposure.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a fashion recommendation with images and text project puts on your resume.

  • Understand data requirements for multimodal item recommendation and how to align images with textual metadata.
  • Encode images and text into shared embeddings using a vision-language model and index them for nearest-neighbour search.
  • Combine content-based similarities with collaborative or business-rule signals to produce ranked recommendations.
  • Evaluate ranking quality with Recall@K and inspect item-level failures such as stock or size inconsistencies.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Fashion Recommendation with Images and Text project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project?
Yes — it’s an advanced, multimodal final year project idea that combines vision and NLP; expect substantial implementation, evaluation and engineering work.
What skills and tools will I need to learn?
You should be comfortable with Python, PyTorch, CLIP-style multimodal models, embedding indexes (FAISS), data preprocessing for images and text, and ranking metrics like Recall@K.
How should I evaluate progress and scope the work?
Start by building image/text encoders and offline metrics (Recall@K, hit rate), add FAISS retrieval and business-rule filters, and plan iterations with train/validation splits; allow weeks for prototyping and extra time for scalability.
