01 / THE IDEA

Multimodal Sentiment Analysis in practice.

Multimodal sentiment analysis combines text, images (and optionally audio or video) to judge sentiment or user intent. Common challenges include aligning modalities, noisy or missing inputs, calibration of confidence, and grounding predictions back to the input modalities for human review.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed application: help platform moderators triage posts that mix images and captions by surfacing likely negative or risky content for human review. Any operational use should keep a human reviewer in the loop; the starter code does not implement multimodal processing.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a multimodal sentiment analysis system project
step by step.

01

Prepare multimodal data

Collect aligned image–text pairs (or video/transcript) and label them for sentiment; handle missing modalities and noisy captions explicitly.

02

Build a baseline fusion model

Start with pretrained image and text encoders (for example CLIP or a transformer plus a CNN) and experiment with concatenation or attention-based fusion.

03

Evaluate with multimodal metrics

Report precision/recall per class, grounding or retrieval scores, and human-usefulness checks on edge cases such as sarcasm or conflicting modalities.

04

Design reviewable outputs

Return modality attributions and example nearest neighbours so human moderators can inspect and correct model decisions.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the multimodal sentiment analysis system starter actually does.

The supplied starter is a text-only baseline: it splits six short hand-written sentences, trains a TF-IDF vectoriser + LogisticRegression pipeline, prints a classification report, and shows one sample prediction. It does not process images, audio or any multimodal embeddings.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
model = Pipeline(
    steps=[
        ("tfidf", TfidfVectorizer(ngram_range=(1, 2), min_df=1)),
        ("classifier", LogisticRegression(max_iter=1000)),
    ]
)

model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)
Important limitation

The starter is a tiny text-only classifier trained on six short sentences with binary labels; it is not multimodal, its dataset is too small to support reliable metrics, and it does not demonstrate any image-text alignment or fusion methods described by the project title.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Multimodal Sentiment: a pilot concept

A proposed extension: assemble a small labelled dataset of image–caption pairs, extract pretrained image and text embeddings (for example CLIP), train a lightweight fusion layer to predict sentiment, and expose modality attributions for human review.

WHO IT COULD SERVESocial platforms
FIRST MVPA lightweight API that accepts an image and caption, returns a sentiment label with confidence and a short grounding explanation (nearest supporting text or image region), and logs inputs for reviewer feedback.
KEY RISKMisclassification of sensitive or ambiguous content and over-reliance on automated labels; keep a human moderator in the loop and avoid using this prototype for autonomous moderation or legal/clinical decisions.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a multimodal sentiment analysis system project puts on your resume.

  • Design a multimodal dataset and handle missing or noisy modalities during preprocessing.
  • Build a baseline fusion model using pretrained image and text encoders and a lightweight fusion layer.
  • Evaluate multimodal results with class-wise precision/recall and grounding checks on conflicting inputs.
  • Explain the starter-code limitation: it is a small, text-only TF-IDF + logistic-regression baseline and not a multimodal implementation.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Multimodal Sentiment Analysis System project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project for CSE or engineering students?
Yes — it is an advanced final year project idea that requires knowledge of ML and deep learning; expect significant work on data, alignment and fusion techniques.
What skills and tools will I need to implement it?
You should know Python, PyTorch, and scikit-learn basics, plus experience with NLP and computer vision libraries, data preprocessing, and model fusion strategies.
How do I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Start with a clear dataset plan and incremental milestones: text-only baseline, single-image fusion, full multimodal fusion; expect several months of work including data collection and experiments.
