Collect labelled images
Gather representative images from the production line and label instance masks for defect types and edge cases such as tiny or overlapping defects.
Segment defect instances. Assess per-object mask quality.
Instance segmentation detects and returns a pixel mask for each object instance — here, individual manufacturing defects. Useful evaluation aspects include mask IoU per instance, false negative rate for missed defects, and operational metrics such as inference FPS and latency on the target hardware.

A proposed application: automatically flag probable defect instances on production-line images so human inspectors can prioritise review. The supplied starter does not implement this; any deployment should keep a human reviewer in the loop for final defect decisions.
Gather representative images from the production line and label instance masks for defect types and edge cases such as tiny or overlapping defects.
Fine-tune a pretrained instance-segmentation model (for example Mask R-CNN) using the labelled masks and augmentations that reflect the production environment.
Report mAP at mask IoU thresholds, per-class recall for small defects, and measure false negative rates on a held-out validation set.
Export an inference pipeline with preprocessing, confidence thresholds, runtime batching, and monitoring for drift and latency.
The supplied starter loads sklearn's digits dataset, fits a RandomForestClassifier to predict digit labels, prints a classification report and shows a confusion matrix. It does not load or train any instance-segmentation model, does not use mask labels, and is unrelated to manufacturing-defect images.
model = RandomForestClassifier(n_estimators=300, random_state=42)
model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)
print(PROJECT_NAME)
print(classification_report(y_test, predictions))
The starter trains a RandomForest on the scikit-learn digits classification dataset — a multiclass classification task on 8x8 hand-written digit features. It contains no mask labels, no object-instance annotations, and no code for segmentation models, so it does not implement instance segmentation for defects or evaluate mask IoU or mAP.
Proposed extension: replace the starter with a fine-tuned Mask R-CNN or Detectron2 model trained on labelled production images with per-defect masks, add augmentation for small/overlapping defects, and build an inspector review UI that shows predicted masks and confidence for human validation.
This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.
