01 / THE IDEA

Gaze estimation in practice.

Gaze estimation predicts where a person is looking from images or video frames. Typical systems detect faces and eyes, crop and align eye regions, then regress gaze coordinates or classify coarse gaze zones; common failure modes include head pose variation, occlusions from glasses or hair, and dataset bias between cameras.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed application: a pilot attention-analytics tool for user-research sessions that flags prolonged off-screen gaze for human review. The starter does not implement this extension and any real deployment must keep a human reviewer in the loop to respect privacy and interpret edge cases.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a gaze estimation system project
step by step.

01

Collect labelled gaze data

Capture faces and annotate gaze targets or screen coordinates; include varied head poses, illumination and camera types.

02

Preprocess and align eyes

Detect face and eye landmarks, crop and normalise eye patches and optionally estimate head pose before training.

03

Train a gaze model

Train a regression or classification model on eye patches and head-pose features and validate with held-out subjects, not just held-out images.

04

Evaluate and monitor

Report angular error or zone accuracy, inspect per-subject errors and deploy monitoring for drift and camera changes.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the gaze estimation system starter actually does.

The supplied starter loads scikit-learn's digits dataset, splits it, fits a RandomForestClassifier to digit images, prints a classification report and shows a confusion matrix. It does not use eye images, gaze labels, face/eye detection, or any gaze-regression model.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
    digits.data,
    digits.target,
    test_size=0.25,
    random_state=42,
    stratify=digits.target,
)

model = RandomForestClassifier(n_estimators=300, random_state=42)
model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)
Important limitation

The code uses the sklearn digits dataset and a RandomForest for digit classification; it contains no face or eye detection, no gaze labels or gaze-coordinate regression/classification, and so does not implement gaze-estimation functionality named in the title.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Gaze Estimation: a pilot concept

Proposed extension: build a pilot that collects webcam frames, extracts aligned eye patches and head-pose features, trains a gaze-regression model, and surfaces human-reviewable attention flags to researchers.

WHO IT COULD SERVEUser-research teams and accessibility researchers
FIRST MVPA service that captures webcam frames, runs face/eye detection, estimates coarse gaze zones with per-subject validation, and outputs a human-review panel of uncertain cases.
KEY RISKGaze estimation is sensitive biometric information; treat outputs as assistive signals only and keep a human reviewer responsible. Inform users about capture, obtain consent, and avoid making safety, medical or legal decisions from the model alone.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a gaze estimation system project puts on your resume.

  • Describe how gaze estimation maps to regression or zone classification and why per-subject splits matter.
  • Collect and label a small diverse gaze dataset and preprocess with face and eye alignment.
  • Train a baseline gaze regressor/classifier and evaluate with angular error or zone accuracy and per-subject statistics.
  • Design a deployable pipeline that includes confidence thresholds and monitoring for camera and subject drift.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Gaze Estimation System project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project?
Yes — gaze estimation is an applied computer-vision topic with scope for dataset work, model design and evaluation; treat this as a project idea rather than code that already implements gaze estimation.
What skills and tools will I need?
You should be comfortable with Python, OpenCV for detection/preprocessing, PyTorch or similar for modelling, and basics of data collection, annotation and evaluation metrics.
How do I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Start by implementing face/eye detection and a simple gaze classifier or regressor, then test on labelled video frames; expect 3–6 months depending on scope and dataset work.
