Create or ingest scenario data
Collect relevant financial features (prices, exposures, macro variables) and label outcomes that reflect loss or breach events for the task.
Run stress-testing simulations. Assess model risk.
Stress testing in finance assesses how portfolios or institutions behave under adverse but plausible scenarios. Practical work includes designing scenario inputs, choosing metrics that reflect economic loss, building a reproducible baseline model, and validating decisions under distributional shift and extreme values.

Stress testing in finance assesses how portfolios or institutions behave under adverse but plausible scenarios. Practical work includes designing scenario inputs, choosing metrics that reflect economic loss, building a reproducible baseline model, and validating decisions under distributional shift and extreme values.
A proposed application: run scenario-based simulations on portfolio features to estimate classification-type failure risk and present results to a risk officer for manual review. This starter does not provide a production-grade risk engine or use real financial inputs.
Collect relevant financial features (prices, exposures, macro variables) and label outcomes that reflect loss or breach events for the task.
Fit a simple pipeline such as scaling plus a tree-based classifier on training scenarios and save preprocessing rules for later use.
Use metrics aligned with decision cost (e.g. precision for breach flagging, economic loss simulations, calibration) and stress-case slices.
Add monitoring for input drift, backtest scenarios, and require human sign-off for high-impact predictions.
The supplied starter generates a synthetic binary classification dataset with sklearn.make_classification, fits a Pipeline that standardises features and trains a RandomForestClassifier, then prints a sklearn classification report. It does not use financial data, economic scenarios, SEC filings, nor compute financial stress metrics.
X, y = make_classification(
n_samples=800,
n_features=10,
n_informative=6,
n_redundant=2,
random_state=RANDOM_STATE,
)
The code uses synthetic, randomly generated features and labels (make_classification). This does not represent financial instruments, market scenarios, exposures or stress events, so reported metrics do not validate financial stress-testing performance or economic risk behaviour.
A proposed extension: replace synthetic data with historical portfolio features and macro scenarios, compute economic-loss metrics, and surface borderline cases in a dashboard where risk officers can accept or adjust scenario assumptions.
This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.
