01 / THE IDEA

AI Customer Support Triage in practice.

Support-triage models predict a category or priority for incoming tickets so human agents can focus on high-value issues. Important challenges include noisy or missing ticket text, class imbalance (rare critical issues), label ambiguity and the need for a human-in-the-loop for costly decisions.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed application: a dashboard that highlights likely high-priority tickets so agents can re-order their queue. The system should present model confidence and allow human override; this starter does not provide that dashboard or any CRM integration.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a ai customer support triage system project
step by step.

01

Curate labelled tickets

Export ticket text, metadata and historical resolution labels from your CRM and define consistent triage labels before modelling.

02

Feature engineering

Create features from text (TF‑IDF, embeddings) and metadata (customer tier, elapsed time) and handle missing values.

03

Train a baseline model

Fit a reproducible pipeline (vectoriser/encoder, scaler if needed, classifier) and save the model and preprocessing steps.

04

Evaluate with decision metrics

Use per-class recall/precision, confusion matrices and a cost-aware metric that reflects misrouting costs; inspect rare-class errors manually.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the ai customer support triage system starter actually does.

The supplied starter generates a synthetic numeric classification dataset with sklearn.make_classification, constructs a Pipeline with StandardScaler and RandomForestClassifier, trains it on the synthetic data and prints a classification report. It does not load ticket text, CRM fields or any real support data.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
X, y = make_classification(
    n_samples=800,
    n_features=10,
    n_informative=6,
    n_redundant=2,
    random_state=RANDOM_STATE,
)

feature_names = [f"feature_{i}" for i in range(X.shape[1])]
data = pd.DataFrame(X, columns=feature_names)
data["target"] = y
Important limitation

The starter uses synthetic numeric features from make_classification and a randomly generated binary target; it contains no ticket text, no CRM fields and no real triage labels. Results on this synthetic data do not validate a support-triage model for production.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Support Triage: a pilot concept

Proposed extension: replace synthetic data with an exported CRM ticket table, train a text-aware pipeline (text vectorisation or embeddings plus metadata), and surface predictions in a reviewable dashboard for agent triage.

WHO IT COULD SERVECustomer support teams
FIRST MVPA REST API that accepts ticket text and metadata, returns a triage label and confidence, and logs predictions for human review and correction.
KEY RISKMisclassifying critical tickets can delay urgent responses; keep a human reviewer in the loop and use conservative thresholds for automated re-routing. Do not use this prototype for automated decisions without auditing.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a ai customer support triage system project puts on your resume.

  • Understand how to map ticket-resolution goals into classification labels and success metrics.
  • Build a reproducible sklearn pipeline that includes preprocessing and a baseline classifier.
  • Evaluate models with classwise precision and recall and inspect rare-class failure modes.
  • Plan a human-in-the-loop deployment that exposes confidence and allows overrides.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

AI Customer Support Triage System project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project for CSE students?
Yes — it’s an advanced, application-focused final year project idea that combines NLP, classification and evaluation; expect to extend the starter to real ticket text and CRM fields.
What skills and tools will I need to complete it?
You should know Python, pandas, scikit-learn, basic NLP (tokenisation, embeddings), data cleaning, handling class imbalance, and evaluation metrics for multiclass/imbalance scenarios.
How should I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Start by replacing the synthetic data with a labelled ticket dataset, add text features and imbalance handling, then measure precision/recall and AUROC per class; a full implementation typically takes 8–12 weeks depending on dataset access.
