01 / THE IDEA

RNN Chatbot Prototype in practice.

A small recurrent chatbot is a sequence-to-sequence learning exercise, not a reliable assistant. A narrow permitted dialogue corpus and explicit fallback behaviour keep the prototype inspectable.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A possible application for conversational ai classes: Help students compare generated responses with retrieval from a small approved FAQ set. This extension is not delivered by the supplied starter.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a simple chatbot with rnns project
step by step.

01

Prepare the data

Use synthetic or licensed non-sensitive dialogue pairs with conversation-level splits.

02

Build the experiment

Train a small recurrent encoder-decoder with start, end and padding tokens.

03

Evaluate the result

Review held-out responses for relevance, repetition and unsupported claims; compare with a retrieval baseline.

04

Define a reviewable output

Limit the demo to a defined educational topic with a clear fallback and no consequential advice.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the simple chatbot with rnns starter actually does.

The supplied starter splits six hand-written sentences with binary labels, fits a TF-IDF unigram/bigram vectoriser and LogisticRegression pipeline, then prints a report and one sample prediction.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
model = Pipeline(
    steps=[
        ("tfidf", TfidfVectorizer(ngram_range=(1, 2), min_df=1)),
        ("classifier", LogisticRegression(max_iter=1000)),
    ]
)
model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)
print(classification_report(y_test, predictions, zero_division=0))
Important limitation

The source is a binary sentence classifier and cannot generate chat responses. A two-example test set cannot support useful performance claims. The sentences are not a representative corpus, and their binary labels do not establish the richer task described in the project title.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

RNN Chatbot Prototype: a pilot concept

Proposed extension: Help students compare generated responses with retrieval from a small approved FAQ set.

WHO IT COULD SERVEConversational AI classes
FIRST MVPLimit the demo to a defined educational topic with a clear fallback and no consequential advice.
KEY RISKFabricated responses and private-dialogue memorisation

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a simple chatbot with rnns project puts on your resume.

  • Train a small recurrent encoder-decoder with start, end and padding tokens.
  • Review held-out responses for relevance, repetition and unsupported claims; compare with a retrieval baseline.
  • Limit the demo to a defined educational topic with a clear fallback and no consequential advice.
  • Explain this limitation: The source is a binary sentence classifier and cannot generate chat responses.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Simple Chatbot with RNNs project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project?
Yes — it’s a compact sequence-to-sequence chatbot idea suited to beginners; use it to demonstrate RNN encoder–decoder concepts and evaluation on a small dialogue corpus.
What should I learn or have before starting?
You should know Python, basic PyTorch, sequence models (RNN/LSTM), tokenisation and evaluation metrics; familiarity with data preprocessing and batching is helpful.
How do I evaluate effort and completeness?
Assess by implementing an RNN encoder–decoder that generates replies, adding fallback handling and metrics (BLEU, perplexity) and comparing against the starter review which currently only implements a binary classifier; aim for a demonstrable dialogue loop and test cases.
