01 / THE IDEA

Music Genre Classification in practice.

Music-genre labels are subjective and recordings from the same artist can leak across splits. Audio features and evaluation should account for clip length and recording conditions.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A possible application for music librarians: Help music librarians review tags in an owned audio collection. This extension is not delivered by the supplied starter.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a music genre classifier project
step by step.

01

Prepare the data

Use licensed audio with genre labels and split by artist or recording source.

02

Build the experiment

Extract documented spectral or MFCC features and fit a simple genre-classification baseline.

03

Evaluate the result

Report macro F1 on held-out artists and inspect mixed-genre and noisy recordings.

04

Define a reviewable output

Provide editable genre suggestions with audio provenance and no redistribution of restricted recordings.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the music genre classifier starter actually does.

The supplied starter synthesises 160 one-second noisy tones near 440 Hz and 880 Hz. It extracts four FFT summary features, fits a 200-tree RandomForestClassifier and reports held-out binary classification results.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
spectrum = np.abs(np.fft.rfft(signal))
features = [
    spectrum.mean(), spectrum.std(),
    spectrum.argmax(), np.percentile(spectrum, 95),
]
# Later in the supplied script, after generating and splitting tone features:
model = RandomForestClassifier(n_estimators=200, random_state=42)
model.fit(X_train, y_train)
print(classification_report(y_test, model.predict(X_test)))
Important limitation

The source distinguishes synthetic tones near two frequencies, not music genres. Distinguishing two synthetic tone ranges does not demonstrate music understanding, speaker identity, transcription or speech synthesis. The source contains no real recordings, transcripts or generated speech.

04 / BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Where a music genre classifier project could go next.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Music Genre Classification: a pilot concept

Proposed extension: Help music librarians review tags in an owned audio collection.

WHO IT COULD SERVEMusic librarians
FIRST MVPProvide editable genre suggestions with audio provenance and no redistribution of restricted recordings.
KEY RISKArtist leakage and subjective genre boundaries

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a music genre classifier project puts on your resume.

  • Extract documented spectral or MFCC features and fit a simple genre-classification baseline.
  • Report macro F1 on held-out artists and inspect mixed-genre and noisy recordings.
  • Provide editable genre suggestions with audio provenance and no redistribution of restricted recordings.
  • Explain this limitation: The source distinguishes synthetic tones near two frequencies, not music genres.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Music Genre Classifier project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project for CSE or engineering students?
Yes — it’s a good beginner-level ML project idea that covers audio processing, feature engineering and classification; expand scope by using real music datasets and careful split strategies.
What skills, tools and data will I need to implement it well?
You should know Python, signal processing basics, librosa for feature extraction, scikit-learn or PyTorch for models, and use varied music datasets while handling clip length and artist leakage.
How should I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Start with baseline features and simple classifiers, then improve with more robust features and cross-validation that prevents artist leakage; expect 4–12 weeks depending on dataset size and scope.
