It is an associate-level exam and more approachable than AWS Security Specialty. Two sections do the damage: Conditional Access policy design, where ordering and exclusions produce non-obvious outcomes, and the Sentinel KQL content — because KQL is a query language, and reading about a query language is not the same as writing one.
What the four weeks cover
Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory) — dynamic groups, Conditional Access policy design and ordering, MFA including FIDO2 hardware keys, password protection and smart lockout, identity protection with risk-based detection, and Privileged Identity Management for just-in-time admin access. Entra Connect, Authentication Strengths, Entra External ID. Service principals versus managed identities, OAuth 2.0 application registration, the consent framework, application versus delegated permissions.
Over-permissioned managed identities, application secrets committed to code, and Conditional Access policies weak enough to still allow legacy authentication.
Network Security Groups versus Application Security Groups. Azure Firewall across basic, standard and premium tiers, plus Azure Firewall Manager. Azure Front Door with WAF policies. DDoS Protection basic versus standard. VNet peering, private endpoints, service endpoints, Azure Bastion. Microsoft Defender for Cloud — Secure Score, the regulatory compliance dashboard, and Defender plans across servers, storage, SQL, containers, app service, key vault, DNS, Resource Manager and APIs. CSPM and Defender for DevOps for IaC scanning.
Worth knowing the lineage: Azure Security Center was renamed Defender for Cloud in 2023, and older study material still uses the old name.
Workspace design, data connector configuration, analytics rules (scheduled queries, near-real-time rules, Microsoft security rules), hunting queries in KQL, workbooks, watchlists, and playbooks via Logic Apps for SOAR automation. KQL in depth — joins including inner, leftouter and leftsemi, summarisation patterns, time-series aggregation, geo-IP enrichment, and the common hunting patterns for brute-force detection, lateral movement and data exfiltration. Microsoft Defender XDR for cross-domain correlation across endpoint, identity, email and cloud apps.
KQL is the part candidates most often underestimate. It is a query language, and you do not learn one by reading about it.
Azure Key Vault — secrets, keys and certificate lifecycle, access policies versus RBAC, soft-delete and purge protection, HSM-backed keys. Azure Disk Encryption, Storage encryption with customer-managed keys, Azure SQL Always Encrypted including secure enclaves. Microsoft Purview for data classification, sensitivity labels and DLP policies. App Service security including authentication providers, CORS and mTLS. API Management security — subscription keys, OAuth 2.0, mutual TLS, IP filtering, rate limiting. AKS security with network policies, pod security standards and Azure Policy for AKS.

Do you need AZ-104 first?
Microsoft lists no hard prerequisite, so formally no. Practically, AZ-500 assumes you already navigate the Azure portal comfortably — resource groups, virtual networks, role assignments.
Never deployed an Azure VM or configured a VNet? Start with AZ-900 or AZ-104. Been working in Azure six months or more? Come straight here. This course opens on Entra ID rather than an Azure primer, which is deliberate — it is a security course, not an Azure introduction.
Do the labs run on real Azure tenants?
Yes, with the billable services active — Entra ID, Defender for Cloud, Sentinel workspaces, Key Vaults, AKS clusters. The institute funds them, so there is no separate Azure bill landing on you.
This matters more on Azure Security than on most tracks. Sentinel and Defender for Cloud are not free-tier services, and a KQL hunting exercise is meaningless without real ingested log data to hunt through. You cannot learn threat hunting from a screenshot of somebody else's query.

When this is the wrong course for you
- You have no Azure background. AZ-900 or AZ-104 first — this course does not teach Azure basics.
- Budget is the binding constraint. Microsoft Learn hosts the official AZ-500 path free, and Microsoft periodically gives away exam vouchers through Learn challenges. Check those first.
- You want AWS rather than Azure. Roughly 60% of US cloud security hiring is AWS-first — look at SCS-C02 instead.
- You need US placement support. This is a certification course.

How hard is the AZ-500 exam?
