Collect and prepare images
Gather content images and representative style images, normalise resolutions, and split a small validation set for perceptual checks.
Style transfer for images. Inspect visual quality and content.
Image style transfer re-synthesises a content image in the visual style of another image, typically using neural networks that separate content and style representations. Key challenges include preserving content, avoiding texture artefacts, controlling stylisation strength, and measuring perceptual quality objectively.

A proposed application is a creative photo-editing tool that lets users apply and tune artistic styles to personal photos; this project sketch does not deliver such an application but outlines steps to reach one.
Gather content images and representative style images, normalise resolutions, and split a small validation set for perceptual checks.
Start with a known neural style-transfer approach (e.g. Gatys, adaptive instance normalisation or a pretrained feed-forward transformer) and provide a simple training loop.
Use qualitative inspection, user A/B tests and perceptual metrics (LPIPS, user preference) alongside content and style loss curves.
Export a lightweight inference model, add preprocessing and postprocessing steps, and measure latency and memory on target hardware.
The supplied starter loads the sklearn digits dataset, splits it, fits a RandomForestClassifier, prints a classification report and displays a confusion matrix. It does not implement any image style-transfer model, use style or content images, or perform neural image synthesis.
digits = load_digits()
X_train, X_test, y_train, y_test = train_test_split(
digits.data,
digits.target,
test_size=0.25,
random_state=42,
stratify=digits.target,
)
model = RandomForestClassifier(n_estimators=300, random_state=42)
model.fit(X_train, y_train)The code trains a RandomForest on the sklearn digits dataset and makes classification predictions; it contains no neural style-transfer model, no content/style image pairs and no image-synthesis or optimisation steps required for style transfer.
A proposed extension: train a feed-forward style-transfer network that runs in real time on mobile devices and expose sliders to control stylisation strength and preserve faces.
This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.
