01 / THE IDEA

Sketch Generation Models in practice.

Sketch generation models synthesise line-drawing or stroke-based images conditioned on prompts or styles. Challenges include representing strokes, modelling sequential structure, evaluating perceptual fidelity and ensuring diversity while avoiding memorisation of training examples.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed application: assist concept artists and UX designers by producing multiple sketch variations from a text prompt or reference image; a human designer reviews and selects or refines outputs. This extension is not provided by the supplied starter code.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a sketch generation models project
step by step.

01

Define the task and data

Decide whether the model generates raster sketches, vector stroke sequences or conditional outputs (text-to-sketch), and curate a labelled dataset of sketches with licence-clear examples.

02

Prepare and represent sketches

Convert sketches into the chosen representation (PNG or stroke sequences), normalise coordinates, and split into train/validation sets without leaking similar sketches.

03

Train a baseline generative model

Start with a small conditional VAE or Transformer on stroke data or a diffusion model on raster images, and log losses and sample outputs during training.

04

Evaluate and inspect outputs

Use quantitative metrics (e.g. FID for raster outputs) and human preference tests, and inspect failure modes such as mode collapse or overfitting to exemplars.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the sketch generation models starter actually does.

The supplied starter creates five 3‑dimensional numeric samples by computing the centroid and covariance of five seed 3‑vectors, draws multivariate-normal samples, clips them to [0,1], and prints the arrays. It does not load images, train a generative model, or produce sketch images or stroke sequences.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
centroid = seed_examples.mean(axis=0)
covariance = np.cov(seed_examples.T) + np.eye(seed_examples.shape[1]) * 0.01
synthetic_samples = rng.multivariate_normal(centroid, covariance, size=5)
synthetic_samples = np.clip(synthetic_samples, 0, 1)

print(PROJECT_NAME)
Important limitation

The starter is a toy numeric example that samples 3‑dimensional vectors; it contains no image data, no model architecture, no training loop and no evaluation metrics relevant to sketch generation. It cannot be used to assess visual quality, diversity, or memorisation of sketches.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Sketch generation: a pilot concept

A proposed extension is to train a conditional generative model (for example a VAE on stroke sequences or a diffusion model on raster sketches) using a small public sketch dataset, and expose a simple UI to generate variations from a prompt or reference sketch.

WHO IT COULD SERVEConcept artists and UX designers
FIRST MVPTrain a conditional VAE or small diffusion model on a curated sketch dataset, provide a web demo that accepts a prompt or reference image and returns several sketch variations, and include a feedback button for human curation.
KEY RISKSynthetic-media risks include generated outputs resembling copyrighted artwork and producing misleading or inappropriate imagery; keep a human reviewer in the loop and do not use this prototype for any automated legal, safety or attribution decisions.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a sketch generation models project puts on your resume.

  • Define a sketch-generation task and choose raster or vector representations for sketches.
  • Prepare a small, licence-clear sketch dataset and split it without leakage.
  • Implement a simple generative baseline and inspect generated samples during training.
  • Evaluate generation quality with both automatic metrics (e.g. FID for raster) and human preference tests.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Sketch Generation Models project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project?
Yes — sketch generation is a substantial applied research and engineering topic for a final year project, combining data representation, sequence modelling and evaluation; scope can be reduced to a focused module if needed.
What skills, tools and data will I need?
You should be comfortable with Python, PyTorch and ML fundamentals, plus sequence models and vector/pen stroke representations; datasets of sketch or stroke sequences (e.g., QuickDraw-like) and basic image/visualisation tools are required.
How do I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Start with data preprocessing and simple baselines, then implement a model, training loop and perceptual/diversity metrics; expect several months for a solid implementation and experiments, shorter for a scoped prototype.
