01 / THE IDEA

Recommendation with GNNs in practice.

Recommendation with graph neural networks frames users and items as nodes in a graph and learns embeddings that capture higher-order relations for ranking or link prediction. Practical failure modes include cold-start users/items, popularity bias, noisy interaction signals and scalability to large graphs.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed application for online retailers: surface personalised item suggestions by training a GNN on user–item interactions and item metadata, while retaining human-reviewed business rules (e.g. safety filters and diversity constraints). This extension is not implemented in the supplied starter code.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a recommendation with gnns project
step by step.

01

Construct the interaction graph

Combine user–item interactions and item metadata into a bipartite or heterogeneous graph, and split edges for training/validation/testing without leaking future interactions.

02

Select a GNN task and model

Frame recommendation as link prediction or rating regression and prototype a GraphSAGE/GCN model with edge-sampling and minibatching using PyTorch Geometric.

03

Validate with ranking metrics

Evaluate with offline ranking metrics such as MRR and Recall@K and inspect cold-start and long-tail item performance separately.

04

Plan deployment and safety

Add caching and fallback (neighbour-based) logic, monitor drift, and expose human-review for business-rule overrides.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the recommendation with gnns starter actually does.

The supplied starter builds a tiny in-memory ratings DataFrame, pivots it to a user–item matrix, computes cosine similarity between users, finds the most similar user to a target, and recommends items that the neighbour rated highly but the target has not seen. It does not construct a graph object with a GNN, nor use PyTorch Geometric or a learned graph model.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
matrix = ratings.pivot_table(index="user", columns="item", values="rating").fillna(0)
user_similarity = pd.DataFrame(
    cosine_similarity(matrix),
    index=matrix.index,
    columns=matrix.index,
)
Important limitation

The starter uses classical user-based collaborative filtering on six users/items: no graph library, no node/edge features, no GNN model, no training loop and no ranking metrics beyond a single neighbour lookup. The toy dataset is too small to validate any production recommendation behaviour.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

GNN-based recommendation: a pilot concept

A proposed extension: build a user–item graph (with item metadata and session/context edges), train a GraphSAGE or GAT model for link prediction using PyTorch Geometric, and compare offline ranking metrics with the baseline cosine approach.

WHO IT COULD SERVEOnline retailers
FIRST MVPAssemble an interaction graph from anonymised logs, train a lightweight GraphSAGE to predict held-out edges, and serve top-K recommendations with a neighbour-based fallback and a dashboard for human review.
KEY RISKBias toward popular items, cold-start failures for new users/items, and privacy risks from interaction logs; keep a human reviewer in the loop for business-rule decisions and do not use the prototype for automated high-stakes choices.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a recommendation with gnns project puts on your resume.

  • Convert interaction logs into a bipartite graph suitable for GNN training and edge splits for evaluation.
  • Implement a GraphSAGE/GAT training loop using PyTorch Geometric and tune it for link prediction.
  • Evaluate recommendations with MRR and Recall@K and perform error analysis on cold-start and tail items.
  • Explain the starter’s limitation: it uses user-based cosine similarity and contains no GNN, graph features or training pipeline.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Recommendation with GNNs project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project?
Yes — exploring GNNs for recommendation is a strong applied final year project idea that combines graph modelling, experiments and evaluation; expect to extend the starter substantially.
What skills and tools will I need to complete it?
Familiarity with Python, PyTorch and PyTorch Geometric, graph concepts, data preprocessing with pandas, and basics of recommender evaluation will be necessary.
How should I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Plan iterative milestones: data loading and graph construction, implement a GNN model and training loop, ranking metrics (e.g. Recall@K, NDCG), and experiments; a focused implementation and evaluation can take several weeks to a few months depending on scope.
