01 / THE IDEA

Question Answering System in practice.

Question answering (QA) maps a question and a context passage to an answer span or generated text. Common error modes include missing context, ambiguous questions, annotation noise, and models that copy plausible but incorrect spans. Evaluation typically uses exact-match and token-level F1 for span tasks, and human review for generation tasks.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed application: an internal document search assistant that highlights answer spans from policy documents and shows confidence scores for a human reviewer to confirm before use. This extension is not implemented in the supplied starter code.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a question answering system project
step by step.

01

Collect and format data

Use an extractive QA dataset such as SQuAD or NaturalQuestions and store examples as {context, question, answer_span} records with provenance.

02

Tokenise and align spans

Apply a transformer tokenizer and convert answer character spans to token indices; handle cases where spans map to multiple tokens or are out of bounds.

03

Train a QA model

Fine-tune a pretrained transformer (BERT/DistilBERT) to predict start and end token positions, tracking exact-match and token-F1 on validation data.

04

Deploy with human review

Serve predictions with answer span highlighting and confidence thresholds, and route low-confidence or high-risk queries to a human reviewer.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the question answering system starter actually does.

The supplied starter creates a synthetic tabular classification dataset (sklearn.datasets.make_classification), builds a scikit-learn Pipeline with StandardScaler and RandomForestClassifier, fits the model and prints a classification report. It does not process text, use tokenisers or fine-tune any QA model.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
model = Pipeline(
    steps=[
        ("scale", StandardScaler()),
        ("classifier", RandomForestClassifier(n_estimators=250, random_state=RANDOM_STATE)),
    ]
)

model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)
Important limitation

The code contains no QA-specific components: it uses numeric synthetic features rather than context+question pairs, has no tokenizer, no span prediction or generation model, and does not use QA datasets such as SQuAD or NaturalQuestions.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Question Answering: a pilot concept

Proposed extension: fine-tune a pretrained transformer on an extractive QA dataset (for example SQuAD v2), expose answers with highlighted spans and confidence, and collect human feedback to improve high-risk queries.

WHO IT COULD SERVEKnowledge workers and internal search teams
FIRST MVPFine-tune a small transformer on a cleaned SQuAD subset, serve a simple web UI that accepts context+question and returns a highlighted answer span with start/end scores and an option for human correction.
KEY RISKQA models can return plausible but incorrect spans; keep a human reviewer in the loop for decisions that affect users or legal/policy outcomes.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a question answering system project puts on your resume.

  • Format extractive QA examples as context, question and answer-span records and convert character spans to token indices.
  • Fine-tune a pretrained transformer for start/end span prediction and monitor exact-match and token-level F1 on validation data.
  • Implement a simple UI that highlights predicted answer spans and shows confidence to a human reviewer.
  • Explain why the supplied starter is not a QA implementation: it trains a random-forest on synthetic numeric features rather than text-based QA data.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Question Answering System project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project for CSE students?
Yes — QA is a solid beginner-to-intermediate deep learning topic that covers NLP, evaluation metrics and data handling; you can scope it for a final year project by focusing on span extraction or generative QA.
What skills and tools will I need to implement a QA system?
You should know Python, basic ML/Deep Learning, tokenization, and HuggingFace transformers; familiarity with datasets like SQuAD and evaluation metrics (exact-match, F1) is helpful.
How should I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Start with dataset preprocessing and a simple baseline (weeks), then fine-tune a transformer and measure exact-match/F1; expect 2–4 months for a complete project including experiments and report.
