01 / THE IDEA

Product search using images and text in practice.

Multi-modal product search maps images and optional text queries into a shared embedding space so similar catalogue items can be retrieved. Key challenges include collecting representative image-text pairs, handling different product views and styles, and measuring retrieval quality (recall@K, precision@K and human usefulness).

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed application: let shoppers upload a photo or type a short description to find matching catalogue items. A human-in-the-loop should review uncertain results; this project describes a prototype workflow rather than a production service.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a product search using images and text project
step by step.

01

Assemble a paired dataset

Collect product images with associated text (titles, attributes) and create a held-out validation set that reflects real queries.

02

Build embeddings

Encode images and text into a common vector space using a pre-trained multi-modal model (for example CLIP) and store vectors in a searchable index.

03

Implement retrieval and metrics

Run nearest-neighbour search, measure recall@K and retrieval latency, and inspect failure classes such as viewpoint and occlusion.

04

Create a reviewable prototype

Expose top-k results in a simple API or dashboard and allow human feedback for incorrectly matched items.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the product search using images and text starter actually does.

The supplied starter loads the sklearn digits dataset, splits it, trains a RandomForestClassifier on flattened 8×8 digit images, prints a classification report and shows a confusion matrix. It does not load product images, text, multi-modal embeddings, or any retrieval/indexing components required for image-and-text product search.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
model = RandomForestClassifier(n_estimators=300, random_state=42)
model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)

print(PROJECT_NAME)
print(classification_report(y_test, predictions))

ConfusionMatrixDisplay.from_predictions(y_test, predictions, cmap="Blues")
plt.title("Vision Baseline Confusion Matrix")
Important limitation

The starter uses the digits dataset (handwritten digits) and a RandomForest classifier for single-modal digit classification. It does not implement multi-modal image-text embedding, nearest-neighbour retrieval, vector indexing, or search metrics such as recall@K. Results from this code do not validate product-search behaviour.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Multi-modal product-search pilot

Proposed extension: replace the starter with a CLIP-based pipeline that encodes images and text into vectors, add a FAISS or Milvus index for fast nearest-neighbour retrieval, and evaluate using recall@K on a held-out set of image and text queries.

WHO IT COULD SERVEE‑commerce catalog teams
FIRST MVPA simple API that accepts an image or short text, returns top-k catalogue items with similarity scores, and logs cases for manual review.
KEY RISKCommon failure modes include visually similar but semantically different products, brand or copyright concerns from user photos, and biased retrieval if the training catalogue is unrepresentative. Keep a human reviewer in the loop before acting on results.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a product search using images and text project puts on your resume.

  • Describe the data and labelling needed for image-and-text product search and curate a small validation set.
  • Encode images and text with a shared embedding model and build a nearest-neighbour search index.
  • Measure retrieval quality with recall@K and inspect failure cases (viewpoint, occlusion, attribute mismatch).
  • Design a reviewable prototype API that exposes top-k matches and collects human feedback.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Product Search Using Images and Text project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project for CSE or engineering students?
Yes — it’s an advanced final year project idea that covers multimodal embeddings, retrieval metrics and dataset design; expect significant implementation and evaluation work.
What skills and tools will I need to complete this project?
Familiarity with Python, PyTorch, representation learning and libraries like CLIP, plus experience in dataset curation, evaluation (recall@K, precision@K) and basic web or database retrieval.
How should I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Start with dataset collection and baseline embeddings, then implement retrieval and compute recall@K/precision@K; a minimal prototype can take 6–10 weeks, full evaluation and improvements several months.
