01 / THE IDEA

Planner-executor-reviewer in practice.

The planner-executor-reviewer pattern splits an agent into three cooperating components: a planner that proposes actions, an executor that carries them out, and a reviewer that checks results and flags failures. Key challenges include defining clear interfaces, logging traces for auditability, matching metrics to real-world costs, and designing safe human-in-the-loop review rules.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed use: prototype a traceable decision loop where a planner proposes action candidates, an executor runs them in a sandbox, and a reviewer flags uncertain outcomes for a human to confirm. This extension is a suggested build and is not implemented by the supplied starter.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a planner-executor-reviewer agent framework project
step by step.

01

Prepare representative traces

Collect or simulate structured traces that include planner proposals, executor results and reviewer annotations; ensure timestamps and identifiers for traceability.

02

Define task and metrics

Specify concrete success criteria (task success rate, reviewer false-positive rate, cost per run) and decide which component outputs are logged.

03

Build a baseline pipeline

Start with small, testable components: a planner heuristic, an executor simulator and a reviewer classifier; log inputs and outputs to reproduce behaviour.

04

Evaluate and iterate

Measure component-level metrics and system-level outcomes, inspect failure traces, and adjust reviewer thresholds to balance automation and human oversight.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the planner-executor-reviewer agent framework starter actually does.

The supplied starter generates a synthetic binary classification dataset with sklearn.make_classification, builds a Pipeline that scales features and fits a RandomForestClassifier, then prints a classification report. It does not implement planner, executor or reviewer components, nor does it use agent traces or planning data.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
model = Pipeline(
    steps=[
        ("scale", StandardScaler()),
        ("classifier", RandomForestClassifier(n_estimators=250, random_state=RANDOM_STATE)),
    ]
)

model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)
Important limitation

The starter is a generic supervised-classification baseline on synthetic data and does not contain any planner, executor or reviewer logic, interaction flow, or trace logging. It cannot validate agent orchestration, component interfaces, or end-to-end decision behaviour described in the title.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Prototype planner-executor-reviewer loop

A proposed extension is to replace the synthetic dataset with recorded experiment logs and implement three small components: a planner that proposes actions from state features, an executor simulator that applies actions and returns outcomes, and a reviewer classifier that flags uncertain or low-quality outcomes for human review.

WHO IT COULD SERVEInternal platform teams and researchers
FIRST MVPA simple orchestrator that chains a planner (rule-based or learned), an executor simulator, and a reviewer classifier, producing structured traces and basic metrics (task success rate and reviewer flag rate).
KEY RISKAutomating actions without adequate reviewer coverage can mis-handle edge cases; keep a human reviewer in the loop for high-risk decisions and log all actions for audits.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a planner-executor-reviewer agent framework project puts on your resume.

  • Translate a multi-component agent idea into concrete inputs, outputs and success metrics for each component.
  • Prepare or simulate structured traces and split them for reproducible experiments.
  • Build a reproducible baseline pipeline using scikit-learn and structured inputs, with logging for traceability.
  • Define system-level metrics (task success rate, reviewer precision/recall, cost per run) and inspect failure traces to refine reviewer rules.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Planner-Executor-Reviewer Agent Framework project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project?
Yes — it’s an advanced systems and research-style final year project idea that combines design, ML tooling and software engineering; expect substantial design and integration work.
What should I learn or prepare before starting?
Familiarise yourself with agent architectures, API design, logging/tracing, human-in-the-loop interfaces, and Python libraries like scikit-learn and pandas for components; also plan evaluation metrics and safety rules.
How do I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Define milestones: interface spec, planner prototypes, executor integration, reviewer policies, and trace-driven evaluation; a rigorous prototype with experiments typically takes several months of full-time work.
