Define the prediction task
Specify the target (for example: next activity success, time-to-complete, or topic mastery) and the input signals available from learning platforms.
Recommend personalised study actions. Assess predicted usefulness.
A personal AI learning mentor predicts useful next actions for a learner from interaction signals and performance history. Key challenges include framing success criteria, collecting privacy-safe interaction logs, handling concept drift as learners progress, and defining metrics that reflect real educational value rather than proxy accuracy.

A personal AI learning mentor predicts useful next actions for a learner from interaction signals and performance history. Key challenges include framing success criteria, collecting privacy-safe interaction logs, handling concept drift as learners progress, and defining metrics that reflect real educational value rather than proxy accuracy.
A proposed application is a tutor-assistant that suggests study activities and revision schedules to learners and provides explainable reasons for each suggestion; a human tutor should remain in the loop and the system must not be used for high-stakes decisions without oversight.
Specify the target (for example: next activity success, time-to-complete, or topic mastery) and the input signals available from learning platforms.
Collect learner interaction logs, anonymise them, engineer time-aware features and hold out a realistic test split that reflects future learners.
Fit a reproducible pipeline (scaling, a tree or linear classifier/regressor) to establish a performance baseline and track versioned experiments.
Use task-appropriate metrics (precision/recall or time-to-complete regression errors), run error analysis for groups of learners, and plan monitoring and rollback strategies.
The supplied starter generates a synthetic classification dataset with sklearn.make_classification, builds a scikit-learn Pipeline with StandardScaler and RandomForestClassifier, fits it, and prints a sklearn classification_report. It does not use real learner logs, produce personalised recommendations, or implement any mentor logic.
model = Pipeline(
steps=[
("scale", StandardScaler()),
("classifier", RandomForestClassifier(n_estimators=250, random_state=RANDOM_STATE)),
]
)
model.fit(X_train, y_train)The code uses a synthetic toy dataset (make_classification) with arbitrary features and binary labels; it therefore does not validate any real personalised-mentor behaviour. There is no modelling of learner states, time-series features, per-learner histories, explainability, or prediction serving.
A proposed extension is to collect anonymised learner interaction logs (questions attempted, timestamps, outcomes), train a time-aware model to predict next-activity success, and expose recommendations via a small API plus an explanation layer for tutors to review.
This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.
