Prepare an annotated corpus
Collect a representative set of news articles and create token-level annotations (BIO tags) for the entity types you need, including edge cases and noisy text.
Identify named entities in news. Judge span and label accuracy.
Named-entity recognition (NER) for news locates and labels spans such as people, organisations, locations, dates and products. News text brings challenges: varied mention forms, nested or overlapping entities, noisy copy-editing, and evolving named-entity inventories. Good practice requires token-level annotation (BIO or similar), attention to span boundaries, and separate evaluation of span detection and label accuracy.

Good practice requires token-level annotation (BIO or similar), attention to span boundaries, and separate evaluation of span detection and label accuracy.
A possible application is automated tagging for newsroom workflows: pre-label entities to speed fact-checking and search, while keeping an editor in the loop to correct errors. This extension is a proposed build and is not delivered by the supplied starter.
Collect a representative set of news articles and create token-level annotations (BIO tags) for the entity types you need, including edge cases and noisy text.
Train a spaCy or Hugging Face token-classification model (or a CRF on word features) that predicts BIO spans; avoid treating the task as sentence-level classification.
Report entity-level precision, recall and F1 (span+label match), and inspect common failure modes like partial spans and label confusion.
Expose predictions via an API and a minimal UI where editors can accept or correct tags; monitor drift and annotation mismatch in production.
The supplied starter implements a sentence-level binary classifier: it splits six short sentences with binary labels, fits a TF-IDF unigram/bigram vectoriser and LogisticRegression pipeline, then prints a classification report and a sample prediction. It does not perform token-level labelling or extract entity spans from news articles.
model = Pipeline(
steps=[
("tfidf", TfidfVectorizer(ngram_range=(1, 2), min_df=1)),
("classifier", LogisticRegression(max_iter=1000)),
]
)
model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)The code performs sentence-level binary classification on six short example sentences and uses no token-level BIO labels, no entity spans, and no news-article dataset, so it does not implement named-entity recognition.
Proposed extension: replace the toy sentences with a token-labelled news corpus and train a spaCy or Hugging Face token-classification model to predict BIO spans; add an editor UI for human correction and logging.
This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.
