01 / THE IDEA

Music recommendation in practice.

Music recommendation from audio features proposes using audio-derived vectors (timbre, tempo, embeddings) alongside behavioural and metadata signals to rank tracks for users. Key production concerns include cold-start items, real-time latency, diversity and safe fallback when audio extraction fails.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed application: personalise playlist suggestions for a listening app by combining inferred audio similarity with user history, while keeping a human-curated fallback for novel or sensitive content. This extension is not implemented by the supplied starter.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a music recommendation from audio features project
step by step.

01

Collect signals and labels

Gather item audio and user interaction data; extract consistent audio embeddings and align them with play, skip and like events.

02

Build a baseline model

Start with an item-similarity ranker using audio embeddings and a simple weighted-score aggregator for behaviour and audio similarity.

03

Evaluate ranking quality

Use offline ranking metrics such as NDCG@K and Mean Reciprocal Rank and inspect cold-start and long-tail failures separately.

04

Prepare for deployment

Add caching, a fallback policy for missing audio embeddings, and logging to capture post-deployment drift and latency.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the music recommendation from audio features starter actually does.

The supplied starter creates a tiny in-memory user-item rating table, computes user-user cosine similarity on the rating matrix, selects the nearest neighbour for a target user and recommends that neighbour's unseen items. It contains no audio processing, feature extraction or use of audio embeddings.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
matrix = ratings.pivot_table(index="user", columns="item", values="rating").fillna(0)
user_similarity = pd.DataFrame(
    cosine_similarity(matrix),
    index=matrix.index,
    columns=matrix.index,
)

target_user = "user_1"
neighbor = user_similarity[target_user].drop(target_user).idxmax()
unseen_items = matrix.loc[target_user][matrix.loc[target_user] == 0].index
scores = matrix.loc[neighbor, unseen_items].sort_values(ascending=False)
Important limitation

The code implements a simple user-based collaborative-filtering demo on hard-coded ratings; it does not extract or use any audio features, nor does it show ranking, evaluation metrics for recommendation quality, or integration with audio libraries mentioned in the project title.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Audio-feature hybrid recommender (proposal)

A proposed extension: extract fixed-length audio embeddings (for example from a pretrained CNN or contrastive audio model), compute item-item similarity in embedding space, and combine that score with behaviour-based signals in a learning-to-rank model to produce personalised lists.

WHO IT COULD SERVEMusic streaming or playlist curation services looking to improve item similarity for recommendations.
FIRST MVPProvide an offline pipeline that: (1) extracts audio embeddings for each track, (2) computes item-item audio similarity, (3) blends audio similarity with user-play signals using a simple linear scorer, and (4) evaluates NDCG@10 on a held-out interaction set.
KEY RISKRecommendation errors can promote inappropriate or copyrighted content; a human-in-the-loop and content filters should remain in charge for moderation and licensing decisions before any public deployment.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a music recommendation from audio features project puts on your resume.

  • Describe the difference between behaviour-based and audio-feature-based signals for recommendation.
  • Compute cosine similarity across item or user vectors and generate neighbour-based recommendations.
  • Design offline ranking evaluations such as NDCG@K and identify cold-start failure cases.
  • Plan a deployable pipeline with embedding extraction, caching and a fallback for missing audio features.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Music Recommendation from Audio Features project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project?
Yes — it’s an advanced final year project idea that combines audio signal processing, representation learning and recommender systems; expect substantial modelling and engineering work.
What skills and tools will I need?
You should know Python, Librosa for audio features, PyTorch for embeddings/models, recommendation algorithms, and basics of evaluation, scalability and dataset handling.
How should I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Start by extracting audio features, build item/user representations, implement ranking and offline metrics (precision@K, NDCG) and iterate; allow several months for prototypes and refinement.
