Define the prediction target
Specify the clinical outcome or proxy to predict, choose acceptable error trade-offs and document ethical constraints and consent requirements.
Monitor mental-health risk. Inspect clinical risk trade-offs.
Mental-health monitoring frames a supervised prediction task from patient data to flag risk of deterioration or need for follow-up. Key challenges include label reliability, temporal context, privacy, calibration and unequal error costs between false negatives and false positives.

A proposed extension: an assistive dashboard for clinicians that prioritises patients for follow-up while keeping a human reviewer in charge; this project is not for making real clinical decisions and must be used only with clinician oversight.
Specify the clinical outcome or proxy to predict, choose acceptable error trade-offs and document ethical constraints and consent requirements.
Collect labelled clinical records or validated questionnaires, handle missingness, protect identifiers and split temporally where appropriate.
Fit a transparent model (for example a scaled tree-based classifier) and report sensitivity, specificity, AUC and calibration.
Expose predictions with confidence scores and an interface for clinicians to inspect features, override outputs and log decisions.
The supplied starter creates a synthetic binary classification dataset with scikit-learn's make_classification, builds a Pipeline with StandardScaler and RandomForestClassifier, fits it, and prints a classification report on a held-out test split.
model = Pipeline(
steps=[
("scale", StandardScaler()),
("classifier", RandomForestClassifier(n_estimators=250, random_state=RANDOM_STATE)),
]
)
model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)The code uses entirely synthetic features and labels generated by make_classification; it does not load clinical data, electronic-health records or validated mental-health labels. Results on this data do not indicate clinical performance, calibration or safety.
A proposed pilot: replace the synthetic data with a small, consented clinical dataset (for example questionnaire scores plus outcomes), train a calibrated model, and present priority lists with clinician feedback capture.
This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.
