Collect and label multimodal pairs
Assemble image-plus-text pairs where the text describes the defect and link each pair to a verified defect class or report to support evaluation.
Match multimodal evidence. Rank likely related items.
A production-minded defect report generator would combine image, text and other modality signals to produce human-readable incident summaries and evidence links. Key challenges include reliable multimodal grounding, handling missing or noisy inputs, and defining metrics that reflect inspection cost rather than raw accuracy.

A production-minded defect report generator would combine image, text and other modality signals to produce human-readable incident summaries and evidence links. Key challenges include reliable multimodal grounding, handling missing or noisy inputs, and defining metrics that reflect inspection cost rather than raw accuracy.
A proposed use-case: help factory inspectors find past cases with similar visual and text evidence so they can draft a report faster. Any automated recommendations must be reviewed and corrected by a human inspector before being used for operational decisions.
Assemble image-plus-text pairs where the text describes the defect and link each pair to a verified defect class or report to support evaluation.
Use a pretrained encoder (for example CLIP for images/text) to compute fixed-size embeddings for each modality and store them with metadata.
Concatenate or fuse modality embeddings and use cosine similarity to rank stored cases against a query composed of current evidence.
Measure recall@K, grounding or usefulness scores with human raters, and inspect failure modes such as missing-images or ambiguous descriptions.
The supplied starter creates random numeric "text" and "image" embeddings (NumPy), concatenates them, forms a synthetic multimodal query near one example, computes cosine similarity against the small synthetic corpus, and prints the top-3 matched indices and scores. It does not load real images, CLIP models, defect examples, or generate textual defect reports.
# In production, replace these with CLIP, audio, video, or document embeddings.
text_embeddings = rng.normal(size=(5, 8))
image_embeddings = rng.normal(size=(5, 8))
combined_embeddings = np.hstack([text_embeddings, image_embeddings])
query_text_embedding = text_embeddings[0] + rng.normal(0, 0.05, 8)
query_image_embedding = image_embeddings[0] + rng.normal(0, 0.05, 8)
query = np.hstack([query_text_embedding, query_image_embedding]).reshape(1, -1)This starter uses random, synthetic embeddings and a five-example in-memory corpus; it only demonstrates concatenation and cosine-based ranking. It does not use a pretrained multimodal encoder (for example CLIP), does not contain defect images or textual reports, and does not implement any report-generation or grounding logic. Results from this code do not validate retrieval quality on real defect data.
A proposed extension: replace the random embeddings with pretrained CLIP (or domain-tuned encoders) to retrieve similar past defect cases, then assemble a candidate report template populated with linked evidence and human-editable fields.
This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.
