01 / THE IDEA

Knowledge distillation in practice.

Knowledge distillation trains a compact student model to mimic a larger teacher model, typically using teacher soft-labels or intermediate representations. Important failure modes include mismatch between teacher and student capacity, overfitting to soft labels, calibration errors, and degraded performance on out-of-distribution samples.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed application is compressing a high-accuracy model for low-latency inference on edge devices, trading some accuracy for reduced memory, compute and latency. Any deployment should keep a human-in-the-loop for validation during rollout.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a knowledge distillation implementation project
step by step.

01

Prepare teacher and data

Train or obtain a high-capacity teacher model on your real labelled dataset and prepare a held-out calibration set for distillation targets.

02

Create student architecture

Design a smaller student network suitable for target hardware and initialise training with the original labels and teacher soft labels (temperature-scaled logits).

03

Distil and evaluate

Train with a weighted loss combining hard labels and teacher soft labels; evaluate top-k accuracy, calibration and latency on representative inputs.

04

Deploy and monitor

Export the student to an inference format (ONNX/TorchScript), measure real-device latency and add monitoring for drift and performance regressions.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the knowledge distillation implementation starter actually does.

The supplied starter generates a synthetic classification dataset with sklearn.make_classification, fits a DecisionTreeClassifier, times repeated single-sample predictions, and prints latency plus tree statistics. It does not implement knowledge distillation, contains no teacher/student training, and uses synthetic data rather than a real model/dataset.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
X, y = make_classification(n_samples=1000, n_features=12, n_informative=8, random_state=42)
model = DecisionTreeClassifier(max_depth=6, random_state=42)
model.fit(X, y)

sample = X[:1]
start = time.perf_counter()
for _ in range(1000):
    model.predict(sample)
latency_ms = (time.perf_counter() - start) * 1000 / 1000
Important limitation

The code uses a single DecisionTreeClassifier trained on synthetic sklearn data and measures prediction latency; it does not create a teacher model, does not train a student model using teacher soft labels or intermediate representations, and contains no distillation loss or real dataset.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Distil a vision model for edge

Proposed extension: use a pretrained high-capacity vision teacher (ResNet or ViT) and distil a compact student (MobileNet or small ResNet) on a labelled image subset, using temperature-scaled soft targets and a combination of cross-entropy and KL-loss.

WHO IT COULD SERVEEdge-device product teams
FIRST MVPA distilled student exported to ONNX that matches teacher accuracy within a pre-defined margin while meeting a target latency on the target device.
KEY RISKStudent models can inherit teacher biases or be poorly calibrated; measure calibration and evaluate on out-of-distribution inputs. Do not use the prototype for high-stakes decisions without human review and larger validation sets.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a knowledge distillation implementation project puts on your resume.

  • Design an experiment that uses a teacher model to produce soft labels for distillation.
  • Train a compact student using a combined hard-label and soft-label loss and tune the temperature and weighting.
  • Measure student quality with accuracy, calibration metrics and real-device latency.
  • Export a trained student to an inference format and validate latency and correctness on target hardware.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Knowledge Distillation Implementation project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project?
Yes — the idea is well-suited for a final year project if you design experiments comparing teacher and student models, explore distillation losses, and report empirical results on real datasets.
What skills and tools will I need to complete it?
You should be comfortable with Python, PyTorch, model training, loss engineering, and evaluation metrics; knowledge of ONNX for exporting and basic ML tooling for datasets helps.
How should I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Evaluate by measuring student accuracy, calibration, inference latency, and robustness versus the teacher; a basic implementation and experiments typically take 6–12 weeks depending on scope.
