Define the task and dataset
Decide target keywords, collect representative speech clips across speakers and environments, and label timestamps for keyword presence.
Detect spoken keywords. Measure real-time reliability.
Keyword spotting recognises a small set of spoken words from an audio stream with low latency and modest compute. Robust feature extraction (e.g. MFCCs), class imbalance, background noise, and on-device latency are key practical concerns.

Keyword spotting recognises a small set of spoken words from an audio stream with low latency and modest compute. Robust feature extraction (e.g. MFCCs), class imbalance, background noise, and on-device latency are key practical concerns.
A proposed application is a low-power wake-word or command detector on edge devices, where humans remain in the loop for corrections and device control; this starter does not implement a production wake-word system.
Decide target keywords, collect representative speech clips across speakers and environments, and label timestamps for keyword presence.
Compute short-time spectral features such as MFCCs or log-mel spectrograms and include augmentation for noise and volume variation.
Fit a compact classifier on training data, measure latency and per-key precision/recall, and inspect false accepts and misses.
Quantise or prune the model for the target device, measure runtime and memory, and add monitoring for input-level drift and increased false accepts.
The supplied starter synthesises 1-second sine-wave clips at two different centre frequencies, computes a small set of FFT-based summary features, then trains a RandomForest classifier and prints a classification report. It does not use speech data, speech feature pipelines (e.g. MFCCs), or an on-device inference path.
rows = [synth_clip(440 + rng.normal(0, 20), 0) for _ in range(80)]
rows += [synth_clip(880 + rng.normal(0, 20), 1) for _ in range(80)]
X = np.array([row[0] for row in rows])
y = np.array([row[1] for row in rows])
X_train, X_test, y_train, y_test = train_test_split(X, y, test_size=0.25, random_state=42, stratify=y)
model = RandomForestClassifier(n_estimators=200, random_state=42)
model.fit(X_train, y_train)The code uses synthetic sine tones rather than recorded speech, so it does not validate keyword spotting on real audio. Feature extraction is a few global FFT summaries rather than time-frequency frames (MFCCs/log-mel), there is no augmentation, no per-key temporal localisation, and no measurement of on-device latency or resource constraints.
A proposed extension is to collect short spoken clips for a small set of keywords, replace the synthetic features with log-mel or MFCC frames, train a compact CNN or TCN, and measure on-device latency and false-accept rates under realistic noise.
This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.
