01 / THE IDEA

Keyword extraction in practice.

Keyword extraction finds representative words or phrases from documents so downstream systems or people can index, search or summarise text. Common challenges include multi-word phrases, stopwords, domain-specific tokens, and noisy inputs such as short messages or mixed languages.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed application: let content teams auto-suggest tags for support tickets and documents, with a human in the loop to confirm or edit suggested keywords; this extension is not implemented by the supplied starter.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a keyword extraction tool project
step by step.

01

Prepare representative data

Collect documents with reference keywords or annotations and create a test set containing noisy and edge-case inputs such as short summaries and mixed-language lines.

02

Build a simple extractor

Implement baseline methods such as top-k TF-IDF terms, RAKE, or spaCy noun-chunk scoring and ensure extraction outputs token-level scores and phrases.

03

Evaluate keyword quality

Measure precision@k, recall@k or ROUGE against annotated keywords and perform qualitative checks for missing multi-word phrases and stopword leakage.

04

Prepare a reviewable output

Expose extracted keywords alongside scores and provenance so human reviewers can accept, edit or reject suggestions.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the keyword extraction tool starter actually does.

The supplied starter implements a document-level binary classifier: it trains a TF-IDF vectoriser + LogisticRegression pipeline on six hand-written sentences with binary labels, prints a classification report on a tiny test split and shows a single sample prediction. It does not produce keyword-level outputs, phrase scoring, or any extraction algorithm.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
model = Pipeline(
    steps=[
        ("tfidf", TfidfVectorizer(ngram_range=(1, 2), min_df=1)),
        ("classifier", LogisticRegression(max_iter=1000)),
    ]
)

model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)
Important limitation

The code performs binary document classification, not keyword extraction: it has no term- or phrase-scoring step, no top-k keyword selection, and labels are document-level booleans rather than annotated keywords or phrases.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Keyword extraction: a pilot extension

Proposed extension: replace the classifier with a keyword-extraction module that returns top-k terms/phrases per document using TF-IDF ranking, RAKE or spaCy noun-chunk scoring, then expose results for human review.

WHO IT COULD SERVEContent teams
FIRST MVPReturn the top-5 keywords per document using TF-IDF term scores with stopword and frequency filtering, plus a small UI to accept or edit suggestions.
KEY RISKIncorrect or noisy keywords can mislead tagging and search; keep a human reviewer in the loop and avoid using the extractor for automated legal, safety or medical decisions without expert oversight.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a keyword extraction tool project puts on your resume.

  • Understand the difference between document-level classification and token/phrase extraction.
  • Implement a baseline extractor that returns top-k TF-IDF terms or RAKE phrases per document.
  • Measure keyword precision@k and investigate failures such as stopword leakage and missing multi-word phrases.
  • Design a human-review workflow that shows provenance and lets reviewers edit or discard suggested keywords.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Keyword Extraction Tool project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project?
Yes — keyword extraction is a well-scoped NLP project that can be expanded with phrase scoring, domain adaptation and evaluation datasets to meet final year requirements.
What should I learn or prepare before starting?
You should be comfortable with Python, text preprocessing, TF-IDF/embeddings, phrase detection, and libraries like scikit-learn and spaCy; familiarity with evaluation metrics helps.
How do I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Evaluate by measuring precision/recall against annotated keywords, using qualitative inspection and user studies; a basic prototype can take 4–8 weeks, extensions longer.
