Define the prediction target
Decide horizon and granularity (e.g. daily per-SKU demand) and convert historical transactions into the target variable by aggregation.
Forecast inventory demand. Assess forecast error.
Inventory demand planning predicts future product demand so procurement and fulfilment decisions can minimise stockouts and overstocks. Common challenges are seasonality, promotions, intermittent demand, lead-time variance and skewed loss from stock errors.

Inventory demand planning predicts future product demand so procurement and fulfilment decisions can minimise stockouts and overstocks. Common challenges are seasonality, promotions, intermittent demand, lead-time variance and skewed loss from stock errors.
A proposed application: provide per-SKU short-term demand forecasts to replenishment planners as a decision-support signal. Human planners should review and approve forecasts before inventory actions; the supplied starter does not produce such forecasts.
Decide horizon and granularity (e.g. daily per-SKU demand) and convert historical transactions into the target variable by aggregation.
Create lag features, rolling summaries, calendar effects and promotion flags, and keep train/validation splits that respect time order.
Fit regression or time-series models and evaluate with MAE/weighted costs and backtest by simulating replenishment decisions.
Expose forecasts via an API or dashboard and monitor forecast drift, calibration and downstream stock metrics.
The supplied starter generates a synthetic binary classification dataset with sklearn.make_classification, builds a pipeline with StandardScaler and RandomForestClassifier, fits it, and prints a classification report on a held-out test split. It does not implement demand forecasting, regression targets, or time-series features.
model = Pipeline(
steps=[
("scale", StandardScaler()),
("classifier", RandomForestClassifier(n_estimators=250, random_state=RANDOM_STATE)),
]
)
model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)The code uses a synthetic classification problem (sklearn.make_classification) and a RandomForestClassifier. Demand planning requires regression or time-series forecasting with temporal features and horizon-aware splits; the starter has neither temporal data nor regression targets, so it cannot validate inventory forecasting performance.
Proposed extension: replace the synthetic data with historical SKU-level transactions, engineer time-series features and train a regression or gradient-boosted time-series model, then expose forecasts to planners via a dashboard for human review.
This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.
