Collect and label utterances
Assemble chat utterances from logs or simulated dialogues and label them with a small, well-defined set of intents; include out-of-scope examples and paraphrases.
Recognise user intents. Design clear intent labels.
Intent recognition maps short user utterances to a fixed set of intents (e.g. AskBilling, ReportBug, Greetings). Real chat data is noisy: spelling variants, short fragments, mixed intents, and out-of-scope requests are common error sources. Production systems combine robust preprocessing, a labelled multiclass dataset, an intent classifier and a human-in-the-loop fallback for low-confidence cases.

A proposed application: route incoming support chats automatically by predicted intent so human agents receive prefiltered queues (for example, billing vs. technical support). The supplied starter does not implement this routing or multiclass intent labelling.
Assemble chat utterances from logs or simulated dialogues and label them with a small, well-defined set of intents; include out-of-scope examples and paraphrases.
Apply tokenisation, lowercasing and optional lemmatisation; build TF‑IDF or transformer embeddings using only training data to avoid leakage.
Fit a multiclass model (logistic regression, random forest or fine-tuned transformer) and track per-intent precision, recall and macro F1.
Inspect confusion pairs and low-confidence examples, add them to labelling queues and keep a human fallback for ambiguous or out-of-scope inputs.
The supplied starter trains a binary TF‑IDF + LogisticRegression pipeline on six short, hand-written sentences with labels [1,0,0,1,0,1]. It splits those six examples into train and test sets, fits the pipeline, prints a classification report for the binary labels, and shows one sample prediction for a single sentence.
model = Pipeline(
steps=[
("tfidf", TfidfVectorizer(ngram_range=(1, 2), min_df=1)),
("classifier", LogisticRegression(max_iter=1000)),
]
)
model.fit(X_train, y_train)The starter contains only six labelled sentences with binary labels and no intent taxonomy or chatbot utterances. It therefore does not implement multiclass intent recognition, intent-specific labels, nor realistic noisy chat data needed to validate a chatbot intent model.
Proposed extension: collect real or simulated chat utterances, define a small set of production intents (including an out-of-scope label), train a multiclass classifier, and expose predictions through an API that routes chats and logs low-confidence cases for human review.
This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.
