01 / THE IDEA

Image captioning in practice.

Image captioning learns to produce short natural-language descriptions of images. Good captions require an image encoder (usually a CNN or transformer), a text decoder (an RNN or autoregressive transformer), and aligned image–text data. Key challenges include object co-reference, fine-grained attributes, dataset bias and fluent language generation.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed application: assist content teams by auto‑drafting captions for image galleries, with an editor-in-the-loop to correct factual or stylistic errors. The supplied starter does not implement this extension.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a image captioning model (computer vision) project
step by step.

01

Collect and align data

Assemble an image–caption dataset (COCO, Flickr30k or custom labelled images) and split by image so captions for the same image remain together.

02

Build an encoder–decoder baseline

Train a visual encoder (pretrained CNN/ViT) and a lightweight decoder (LSTM or transformer) that maps image features to token sequences with teacher forcing.

03

Evaluate generation quality

Use CIDEr, BLEU and SPICE for automatic checks and inspect examples for hallucination, missing objects and incorrect attributes.

04

Deploy with human review

Expose captions with confidence scores and a correction interface so editors can fix factual errors before publication.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the image captioning model (computer vision) starter actually does.

The supplied starter loads the sklearn digits dataset, trains a RandomForestClassifier to predict digit labels from flattened 8×8 images, prints a classification report and displays a confusion matrix. It does not implement any image captioning components (image encoder, language decoder, tokeniser, or caption dataset).

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
model = RandomForestClassifier(n_estimators=300, random_state=42)
model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)

print(PROJECT_NAME)
print(classification_report(y_test, predictions))
Important limitation

The code performs digit classification on sklearn's load_digits dataset rather than image captioning: it uses a RandomForest on flattened 8×8 images and lacks an image encoder–text decoder, tokenisation, and an image–caption dataset.

04 / BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Where a image captioning model (computer vision) project could go next.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Captioning pilot for editorial teams

Proposed extension: train an encoder–decoder model on a small COCO or Flickr30k subset, then provide an editor interface that surfaces captions with confidence and example edits.

WHO IT COULD SERVEContent or editorial teams
FIRST MVPA web interface that shows generated captions for uploaded images, lets an editor accept or edit text, and logs edits to retrain the decoder.
KEY RISKCaptioning models may hallucinate objects or attributes; keep a human editor in the loop and do not use autogenerated captions for sensitive or factual claims without verification.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a image captioning model (computer vision) project puts on your resume.

  • Explain the image captioning task and the role of an encoder–decoder architecture.
  • Prepare an image–caption dataset split that preserves all captions per image for reliable evaluation.
  • Train a baseline encoder–decoder and compute CIDEr, BLEU and SPICE to compare generations.
  • Design an editor-in-the-loop deployment that surfaces low‑confidence captions for human review.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Image Captioning Model (Computer Vision) project FAQs.

Is Image Captioning suitable as a final year project?
Yes — it’s a solid applied computer vision + NLP topic that demonstrates multimodal modelling, evaluation and dataset handling; scope can be adjusted for one semester.
What skills and tools do I need to complete this project?
You should know Python, PyTorch, basic deep learning, and tokenisation; familiarity with transformers, image encoders (CNN/ViT), and image–caption datasets like COCO helps.
How should I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Start by building an encoder–decoder baseline, then add attention and metrics like BLEU/CIDEr; expect 3–6 months including data prep, training and experiments.
