Define the target
Decide whether LOS is modelled as regression (days), ordinal categories (short/medium/long) or a classification of prolonged stay, and align metrics with the decision cost.
Predict hospital stay length. Consider clinical risks.
Length-of-stay (LOS) prediction estimates how long a patient will remain in hospital from structured inputs. Useful production considerations include target definition (continuous days or discrete buckets), censoring, class imbalance, calibration and clinical safety checks.

A proposed application: triage teams could use an LOS score as one input to bed-management dashboards, with a clinician or bed manager in the loop to confirm any operational decisions. A human reviewer must remain in charge and this prototype must not be used to make real clinical or operational decisions.
Decide whether LOS is modelled as regression (days), ordinal categories (short/medium/long) or a classification of prolonged stay, and align metrics with the decision cost.
Use deidentified, licensed hospital data (for example MIMIC samples under approved access), handle censoring and temporal leakage, and document missingness patterns.
Fit a simple baseline such as scaled features with a tree ensemble or ordinal regression and report appropriate metrics (RMSE or mean absolute error for regression, or macro F1 and calibration for classification).
Assess calibration, subgroup performance, deployment monitoring needs and require a human reviewer for decisions affecting patient care.
The supplied starter generates a synthetic binary classification dataset with sklearn.make_classification, constructs a Pipeline that standardises features and fits a RandomForestClassifier, then prints a classification report on a held-out test split. It does not use hospital records, timestamps, censoring, or a true LOS target.
model = Pipeline(
steps=[
("scale", StandardScaler()),
("classifier", RandomForestClassifier(n_estimators=250, random_state=RANDOM_STATE)),
]
)
model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)The starter uses an artificial binary target from make_classification rather than real hospital length-of-stay data. LOS is usually modelled as regression or ordinal categories and requires handling censoring, admission/discharge timestamps and clinical covariates; none of those are present. Performance on the synthetic dataset does not indicate real-world clinical usefulness or safety.
A proposed extension: replace the synthetic data with a licensed, deidentified hospital dataset, model LOS as days or ordinal buckets, and expose model outputs in a dashboard where operational staff review and override predictions.
This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.
