Define the target and inputs
Decide whether the model predicts binary labels, a regression score, or a multi-class rating and list input sources such as filings, ESG datasets and market data.
Score company ESG. Weigh investment factors.
An ESG investment scoring model assigns numeric or categorical scores to firms using environmental, social and governance signals. Building a reliable prototype requires careful feature design from financial and textual sources, robust validation that matches investment costs, and monitoring for data drift and label change.

An ESG investment scoring model assigns numeric or categorical scores to firms using environmental, social and governance signals. Building a reliable prototype requires careful feature design from financial and textual sources, robust validation that matches investment costs, and monitoring for data drift and label change.
A proposed use case: rank small portfolios by a transparent ESG score to help analysts prioritise companies for further human review. This project should keep a human-in-the-loop because prototype scores do not substitute for investment decisions.
Decide whether the model predicts binary labels, a regression score, or a multi-class rating and list input sources such as filings, ESG datasets and market data.
Collect labelled examples or proxies from real financial and ESG sources and ensure splits are time-aware to avoid leakage.
Fit a simple pipeline (scaling plus a tree or linear model), compute appropriate metrics (MAE, calibration, economic utility) and save the experiment artefacts.
Define monitoring for input distribution drift, label shift and business-impact metrics and require human sign-off for automated actions.
The supplied starter creates a synthetic binary classification dataset with sklearn.make_classification, builds a Pipeline with StandardScaler and RandomForestClassifier, fits the model, and prints a sklearn classification report. It does not load financial or ESG data nor implement ESG-specific feature extraction or scoring logic.
model = Pipeline(
steps=[
("scale", StandardScaler()),
("classifier", RandomForestClassifier(n_estimators=250, random_state=RANDOM_STATE)),
]
)
model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)The starter uses toy synthetic features from make_classification and arbitrary binary targets; these are not financial or ESG signals and cannot validate an ESG scoring approach. No domain features, no economic metrics (MAE, Sharpe) and no time-aware splitting are present, so results do not reflect the real task.
A proposed extension: replace synthetic data with company-level ESG indicators and filings-derived features, train a regression or ordinal model to predict established ESG ratings, and expose a review UI where analysts can override or comment on scores.
This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.
