01 / THE IDEA

Diagram understanding in practice.

Diagram understanding aims to associate graphical elements with explanatory text and retrieve or answer questions about diagrams. Key challenges include aligning visual layout and semantics, handling varied file formats (PDF, SVG), and evaluating grounding and usefulness rather than only retrieval accuracy.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed application: an authoring aid that finds explanatory text or examples for diagram regions to speed technical documentation. Any deployed system should keep a human reviewer in the loop to check correctness and avoid over-reliance on noisy automatic matches.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a diagram understanding assistant project
step by step.

01

Collect paired data

Gather image-text pairs that reflect the diagrams and captions or region-level annotations you intend to support, and split them by document to avoid leakage.

02

Create multimodal embeddings

Generate embeddings for both diagram images and their associated text using a pretrained model such as CLIP and keep modality alignment consistent.

03

Build a retrieval baseline

Index combined embeddings and measure recall@K and grounding metrics by querying with held-out multimodal inputs.

04

Inspect failure cases

Manually review low-scoring but relevant matches and cases of layout-dependent meaning to refine preprocessing and annotation schema.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the diagram understanding assistant starter actually does.

The supplied starter creates synthetic random 'text' and 'image' embeddings with NumPy, concatenates them into multimodal vectors, constructs a noisy query from the first sample, computes cosine similarity to all combined vectors, and prints the top ranks and scores. It is a minimal retrieval demo using random data, not a diagram understanding model.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
combined_embeddings = np.hstack([text_embeddings, image_embeddings])

query_text_embedding = text_embeddings[0] + rng.normal(0, 0.05, 8)
query_image_embedding = image_embeddings[0] + rng.normal(0, 0.05, 8)
query = np.hstack([query_text_embedding, query_image_embedding]).reshape(1, -1)

scores = cosine_similarity(query, combined_embeddings).ravel()
Important limitation

The code uses random Gaussian arrays as embeddings; it does not load or process diagrams, captions, or any labelled dataset, and it does not use CLIP or another real multimodal encoder. Therefore it cannot validate diagram grounding, retrieval quality on real data, or any downstream understanding task.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Diagram understanding: a pilot concept

Proposed extension: replace synthetic vectors with CLIP (or a domain-adapted vision-language model), index real diagram-image and caption pairs, then build a small UI that highlights matched regions and lets users correct labels.

WHO IT COULD SERVETechnical authors and documentation teams
FIRST MVPA searchable demo that returns top-k diagram-caption matches for an input diagram and lets a human accept or correct the top result; measure recall@5 on a held-out labelled set.
KEY RISKDiagrams encode precise relationships and layout; automatic matches can mislead users if a human reviewer is not present. This prototype must not be used for safety-critical or authoritative documentation without human verification.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a diagram understanding assistant project puts on your resume.

  • Prepare a small paired dataset of diagram images and associated text suitable for retrieval experiments.
  • Embed images and text consistently and build a simple nearest-neighbour retrieval baseline.
  • Evaluate retrieval with recall@K and inspect grounded matches to identify common failure modes.
  • Explain the starter-code limitation: it uses random embeddings and therefore cannot validate diagram understanding.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Diagram Understanding Assistant project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project?
Yes — it’s an advanced, research-oriented final year project idea that combines vision and language; expect implementation, dataset work, and evaluation efforts over a semester.
What skills and tools will I need?
Familiarity with Python, NumPy, ML libraries, multimodal encoders (e.g., CLIP), basic image/text preprocessing, and handling PDF/SVG formats will be essential.
How should I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Evaluate on tasks like element-text grounding, retrieval accuracy, and qualitative QA usefulness; a working prototype typically takes 2–4 months with dataset preparation and model integration.
